And the word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying,1The word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month:
"Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.2"Son of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.
"Speak a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Put on the pot, put it on and also pour water in it;3Recite a proverb to this rebellious house and say to them, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: "'Set on the pot, set it on, pour water in it too;
Put in it the pieces, Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; Fill it with choice bones.4add the pieces of meat to it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with choice bones.
"Take the choicest of the flock, And also pile wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also seethe its bones in it."5Take the choice bone of the flock, heap up bones under it; boil rapidly, and boil its bones in it.
'Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the bloody city, To the pot in which there is rust And whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, Without making a choice.6"'Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed, the pot whose rot is in it, whose rot has not been removed from it! Empty it piece by piece. No lot has fallen on it.
"For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the ground To cover it with dust.7For her blood was in it; she poured it on an exposed rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it up with dust.
"That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, That it may not be covered."8To arouse anger, to take vengeance, I have placed her blood on an exposed rock so that it cannot be covered up.
'Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.9"'Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed! I will also make the pile high.
"Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, Boil the flesh well And mix in the spices, And let the bones be burned.10Pile up the bones, kindle the fire; cook the meat well, mix in the spices, let the bones be charred.
"Then set it empty on its coals So that it may be hot And its bronze may glow And its filthiness may be melted in it, Its rust consumed.11Set the empty pot on the coals, until it becomes hot and its copper glows, until its uncleanness melts within it and its rot is consumed.
"She has wearied Me with toil, Yet her great rust has not gone from her; Let her rust be in the fire!12It has tried my patience; yet its thick rot is not removed from it. Subject its rot to the fire!
"In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have spent My wrath on you.13You mix uncleanness with obscene conduct. I tried to cleanse you, but you are not clean. You will not be cleansed from your uncleanness until I have exhausted my anger on you.
"I, the LORD, have spoken; it is coming and I will act. I will not relent, and I will not pity and I will not be sorry; according to your ways and according to your deeds I will judge you," declares the Lord GOD.'"14"'I the LORD have spoken; judgment is coming and I will act! I will not relent, or show pity, or be sorry! I will judge you according to your conduct and your deeds, declares the sovereign LORD.'"
And the word of the LORD came to me saying,15The word of LORD came to me:
"Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a blow; but you shall not mourn and you shall not weep, and your tears shall not come.16"Son of man, realize that I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you with a jolt, but you must not mourn or weep or shed tears.
"Groan silently; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your shoes on your feet, and do not cover your mustache and do not eat the bread of men."17Groan in silence for the dead, but do not perform mourning rites. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your lip and do not eat food brought by others."
So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded.18So I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. In the morning I acted just as I was commanded.
The people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things that you are doing mean for us?"19Then the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things you are doing mean for us?"
Then I said to them, "The word of the LORD came to me saying,20So I said to them: "The word of the LORD came to me:
'Speak to the house of Israel, "Thus says the Lord GOD, 'Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes and the delight of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.21Say to the house of Israel, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: Realize I am about to desecrate my sanctuary--the source of your confident pride, the object in which your eyes delight, and your life's passion. Your very own sons and daughters whom you have left behind will die by the sword.
You will do as I have done; you will not cover your mustache and you will not eat the bread of men.22Then you will do as I have done: You will not cover your lip or eat food brought by others.
'Your turbans will be on your heads and your shoes on your feet. You will not mourn and you will not weep, but you will rot away in your iniquities and you will groan to one another.23Your turbans will be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you will not mourn or weep, but you will rot for your iniquities and groan among yourselves.
'Thus Ezekiel will be a sign to you; according to all that he has done you will do; when it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.'"24Ezekiel will be an object lesson for you; you will do all that he has done. When it happens, then you will know that I am the sovereign LORD.'
As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their stronghold, the joy of their pride, the desire of their eyes and their heart's delight, their sons and their daughters,25"And you, son of man, this is what will happen on the day I take from them their stronghold--their beautiful source of joy, the object in which their eyes delight, and the main concern of their lives, as well as their sons and daughters:
that on that day he who escapes will come to you with information for your ears?26On that day a fugitive will come to you to report the news.
'On that day your mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and be mute no longer. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD.'"27On that day you will be able to speak again; you will talk with the fugitive and be silent no longer. You will be an object lesson for them, and they will know that I am the LORD."
