Then Job replied,1Then Job answered:
"Even today my complaint is rebellion; His hand is heavy despite my groaning.2"Even today my complaint is still bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning.
"Oh that I knew where I might find Him, That I might come to His seat!3O that I knew where I might find him, that I could come to his place of residence!
"I would present my case before Him And fill my mouth with arguments.4I would lay out my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.
"I would learn the words which He would answer, And perceive what He would say to me.5I would know with what words he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me.
"Would He contend with me by the greatness of His power? No, surely He would pay attention to me.6Would he contend with me with great power? No, he would only pay attention to me.
"There the upright would reason with Him; And I would be delivered forever from my Judge.7There an upright person could present his case before him, and I would be delivered forever from my judge.
"Behold, I go forward but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him;8"If I go to the east, he is not there, and to the west, yet I do not perceive him.
When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him; He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.9In the north when he is at work, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I see no trace of him.
"But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.10But he knows the pathway that I take; if he tested me, I would come forth like gold.
"My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside.11My feet have followed his steps closely; I have kept to his way and have not turned aside.
"I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.12I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my allotted portion.
"But He is unique and who can turn Him? And what His soul desires, that He does.13But he is unchangeable, and who can change him? Whatever he has desired, he does.
"For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such decrees are with Him.14For he fulfills his decree against me, and many such things are his plans.
"Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence; When I consider, I am terrified of Him.15That is why I am terrified in his presence; when I consider, I am afraid because of him.
"It is God who has made my heart faint, And the Almighty who has dismayed me,16Indeed, God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.
But I am not silenced by the darkness, Nor deep gloom which covers me.17Yet I have not been silent because of the darkness, because of the thick darkness that covered my face.
