| 1Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came near; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah. | 1The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward |
| 2They stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the leaders and all the congregation, at the doorway of the tent of meeting, saying, | 2and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, |
| 3"Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and he had no sons. | 3"Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. |
| 4"Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among our father's brothers." | 4Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." |
| 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD. | 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD, |
| 6Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 6and the LORD said to him, |
| 7"The daughters of Zelophehad are right in their statements. You shall surely give them a hereditary possession among their father's brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them. | 7"What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and give their father's inheritance to them. |
| 8"Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. | 8"Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. |
| 9'If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. | 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. |
| 10'If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. | 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. |
| 11'If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall possess it; and it shall be a statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.'" | 11If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" |
| 12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel. | 12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. |
| 13"When you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was; | 13After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, |
| 14for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) | 14for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) |
| 15Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, | 15Moses said to the LORD, |
| 16"May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, | 16"May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community |
| 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep which have no shepherd." | 17to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd." |
| 18So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; | 18So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. |
| 19and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. | 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. |
| 20"You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him. | 20Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. |
| 21"Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his command they shall go out and at his command they shall come in, both he and the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation." | 21He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in." |
| 22Moses did just as the LORD commanded him; and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. | 22Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. |
| 23Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses. | 23Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses. |
