A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 1A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. 2For Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and Your hand has pressed down on me.
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. 3There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger; there is no rest in my bones because of my sin.
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. 4For my iniquities have overwhelmed me; they are a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. 5My wounds are foul and festering because of my sinful folly.
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. 6I am bent and brought low; all day long I go about mourning.
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. 7For my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body.
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 8I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. 9O Lord, my every desire is before You; my groaning is not hidden from You.
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. 10My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light of my eyes has faded.
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. 11My beloved and friends shun my disease, and my kinsmen stand at a distance.
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. 12Those who seek my life lay snares; those who wish me harm speak destruction, plotting deceit all day long.
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. 13But like a deaf man, I do not hear; and like a mute man, I do not open my mouth.
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. 14I am like a man who cannot hear, whose mouth offers no reply.
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! 15I wait for You, O LORD; You will answer, O Lord my God.
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 16For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—those who taunt me when my foot slips.”
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. 17For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. 18Yes, I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 19Many are my enemies without cause, and many hate me without reason.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 20Those who repay my good with evil attack me for pursuing the good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! 21Do not forsake me, O LORD; be not far from me, O my God.
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! 22Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
