Psalm 38
NET Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew International Version
A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 1A psalm of David. A petition. LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. 2Your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down on me.
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. 3Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. 4My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. 5My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. 6I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning.
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. 7My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 8I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. 9All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. 10My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes.
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. 11My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. 12Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie.
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. 13I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak;
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. 14I have become like one who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply.
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! 15LORD, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God.
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 16For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip."
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. 17For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. 18I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 19Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 20Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! 21LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God.
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! 22Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.
