For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. 1For the choirmaster. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me; all day they press their attack.
Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. 2My enemies pursue me all day long, for many proudly assail me.
When I am afraid, I trust in you. 3When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.
In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? 4In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. 5All day long they twist my words; all their thoughts are on my demise.
They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life. 6They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps while they wait to take my life.
Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God! 7In spite of such sin, will they escape? In Your anger, O God, cast down the nations.
You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll? 8You have taken account of my wanderings. Put my tears in Your bottle—are they not in Your book?
My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side. 9Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help. By this I will know that God is on my side.
In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise--10In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise,
in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? 11in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, 12Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render thank offerings to You.
when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life. 13For You have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
