For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. 1Be gracious to me, God, for a man is trampling me; he fights and oppresses me all day long.
Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. 2My adversaries trample me all day, for many arrogantly fight against me.
When I am afraid, I trust in you. 3When I am afraid, I will trust in you.
In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? 4In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. 5They twist my words all day long; all their thoughts against me are evil.
They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life. 6They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps while they wait to take my life.
Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God! 7Will they escape in spite of such sin? God, bring down the nations in wrath.
You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll? 8You yourself have recorded my wanderings. Put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side. 9Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call. This I know: God is for me.
In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise--10In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise,
in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? 11in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere humans do to me?
I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, 12I am obligated by vows to you, God; I will make my thank offerings to you.
when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life. 13For you rescued me from death, even my feet from stumbling, to walk before God in the light of life.
