The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:
"Tell the Israelites: 'This is the kind of creature you may eat from among all the animals that are on the land.2"Tell the Israelites: You may eat all these kinds of land animals.
You may eat any among the animals that has a divided hoof (the hooves are completely split in two) and that also chews the cud.3You may eat any animal with divided hooves and that chews the cud.
However, you must not eat these from among those that chew the cud and have divided hooves: The camel is unclean to you because it chews the cud even though its hoof is not divided.4But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves you are not to eat these: camels, though they chew the cud, do not have divided hooves--they are unclean for you;
The rock badger is unclean to you because it chews the cud even though its hoof is not divided.5hyraxes, though they chew the cud, do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;
The hare is unclean to you because it chews the cud even though its hoof is not divided.6hares, though they chew the cud, do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;
The pig is unclean to you because its hoof is divided (the hoof is completely split in two), even though it does not chew the cud.7pigs, though they have divided hooves, do not chew the cud--they are unclean for you.
You must not eat from their meat and you must not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you. 8Do not eat any of their meat or touch their carcasses--they are unclean for you.
"'These you can eat from all creatures that are in the water: Any creatures in the water that have both fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat.9"This is what you may eat from all that is in the water: You may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or streams.
But any creatures that do not have both fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the streams, from all the swarming things of the water and from all the living creatures that are in the water, are detestable to you.10But these are to be abhorrent to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.
Since they are detestable to you, you must not eat their meat and their carcass you must detest.11They are to remain abhorrent to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must abhor their carcasses.
Any creature in the water that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you. 12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be abhorrent to you.
"'These you are to detest from among the birds--they must not be eaten, because they are detestable: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,13"You are to abhor these birds. They must not be eaten because they are abhorrent: eagles, bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures,
the kite, the buzzard of any kind,14kites, any kind of falcon,
every kind of crow,15every kind of raven,
the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the long-eared owl, the hawk of any kind,16ostriches, short-eared owls, gulls, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the cormorant, the screech owl,17little owls, cormorants, long-eared owls,
the white owl, the scops owl, the osprey,18barn owls, eagle owls, ospreys,
the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. 19storks, any kind of heron, hoopoes, and bats.
"'Every winged swarming thing that walks on all fours is detestable to you.20"All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be abhorrent to you.
However, this you may eat from all the winged swarming things that walk on all fours, which have jointed legs to hop with on the land.21But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
These you may eat from them: the locust of any kind, the bald locust of any kind, the cricket of any kind, the grasshopper of any kind.22You may eat these: any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, and grasshopper.
But any other winged swarming thing that has four legs is detestable to you. 23All other winged insects that have four feet are to be abhorrent to you.
"'By these you defile yourselves; anyone who touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening,24"These will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and anyone who carries their carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until the evening. 25and whoever carries any of their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
"'All animals that divide the hoof but it is not completely split in two and do not chew the cud are unclean to you; anyone who touches them becomes unclean.26All animals that have hooves but do not have a divided hoof and do not chew the cud are unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean.
All that walk on their paws among all the creatures that walk on all fours are unclean to you. Anyone who touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening,27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and the one who carries their carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you. 28and anyone who carries their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
"'Now this is what is unclean to you among the swarming things that swarm on the land: the rat, the mouse, the large lizard of any kind,29"These creatures that swarm on the ground are unclean for you: weasels, mice, any kind of large lizard,
the Mediterranean gecko, the spotted lizard, the wall gecko, the skink, and the chameleon.30geckos, monitor lizards, common lizards, skinks, and chameleons.
These are the ones that are unclean to you among all the swarming things. Anyone who touches them when they die will be unclean until evening.31These are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.
Also, anything they fall on when they die will become unclean--any wood vessel or garment or article of leather or sackcloth. Any such vessel with which work is done must be immersed in water and will be unclean until the evening. Then it will become clean.32When any one of them dies and falls on anything it becomes unclean--any item of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work. It is to be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
As for any clay vessel they fall into, everything in it will become unclean and you must break it.33If any of them falls into any clay pot, everything in it will become unclean; you are to break it.
Any food that may be eaten which becomes soaked with water will become unclean. Anything drinkable in any such vessel will become unclean.34Any edible food coming into contact with that unclean water will become unclean, and any drinkable liquid in any container will become unclean.
Anything their carcass may fall on will become unclean. An oven or small stove must be smashed to pieces; they are unclean, and they will stay unclean to you.35Anything one of their carcasses falls on will become unclean. If it is an oven or stove, it is to be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
However, a spring or a cistern which collects water will be clean, but one who touches their carcass will be unclean.36A spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but someone who touches a carcass in it will become unclean.
Now, if such a carcass falls on any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean,37If one of their carcasses falls on any seed that is to be sown, it is clean;
but if water is put on the seed and such a carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you. 38but if water has been put on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you.
"'Now if an animal that you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until the evening.39"If one of the animals that you use for food dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean until evening.
One who eats from its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening, and whoever carries its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.40Anyone who eats some of its carcass is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. Anyone who carries its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
Every swarming thing that swarms on the land is detestable; it must not be eaten.41"All the creatures that swarm on the earth are abhorrent; they must not be eaten.
You must not eat anything that crawls on its belly or anything that walks on all fours or on any number of legs of all the swarming things that swarm on the land, because they are detestable.42Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet, for they are abhorrent.
Do not make yourselves detestable by any of the swarming things. You must not defile yourselves by them and become unclean by them,43Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
for I am the LORD your God and you are to sanctify yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any of the swarming things that creep on the ground,44For I am the LORD your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. Do not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.
for I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, and you are to be holy because I am holy.45For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy.
This is the law of the land animals, the birds, all the living creatures that move in the water, and all the creatures that swarm on the land,46"This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground,
to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the living creatures that may be eaten and the living creatures that must not be eaten.'" 47in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten."
