NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet: 1A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.
LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! 2O LORD, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O LORD, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.
God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth. 3God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.
He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power. 4His brightness was like the light; rays flashed from his hand; and there he veiled his power.
Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him. 5Before him went pestilence, and plague followed at his heels.
He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. 6He stood and measured the earth; he looked and shook the nations; then the eternal mountains were scattered; the everlasting hills sank low. His were the everlasting ways.
I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking. 7I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots? 8Was your wrath against the rivers, O LORD? Was your anger against the rivers, or your indignation against the sea, when you rode on your horses, on your chariot of salvation?
Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface. 9You stripped the sheath from your bow, calling for many arrows. Selah You split the earth with rivers.
When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. 10The mountains saw you and writhed; the raging waters swept on; the deep gave forth its voice; it lifted its hands on high.
The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. 11The sun and moon stood still in their place at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.
You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. 12You marched through the earth in fury; you threshed the nations in anger.
You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah. 13You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, laying him bare from thigh to neck. Selah
You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition. 14You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors, who came like a whirlwind to scatter me, rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. 15You trampled the sea with your horses, the surging of mighty waters.
I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us. 16I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound; rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us.
When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, 17Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls,
I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! 18yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) 19GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.
