This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet: 1A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.
LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! 2LORD, I have heard the report about You and I fear. O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years, In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy.
God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth. 3God comes from Teman, And the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the heavens, And the earth is full of His praise.
He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power. 4His radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand, And there is the hiding of His power.
Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him. 5Before Him goes pestilence, And plague comes after Him.
He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. 6He stood and surveyed the earth; He looked and startled the nations. Yes, the perpetual mountains were shattered, The ancient hills collapsed. His ways are everlasting.
I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking. 7I saw the tents of Cushan under distress, The tent curtains of the land of Midian were trembling.
Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots? 8Did the LORD rage against the rivers, Or was Your anger against the rivers, Or was Your wrath against the sea, That You rode on Your horses, On Your chariots of salvation?
Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface. 9Your bow was made bare, The rods of chastisement were sworn. Selah. You cleaved the earth with rivers.
When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. 10The mountains saw You and quaked; The downpour of waters swept by. The deep uttered forth its voice, It lifted high its hands.
The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. 11Sun and moon stood in their places; They went away at the light of Your arrows, At the radiance of Your gleaming spear.
You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. 12In indignation You marched through the earth; In anger You trampled the nations.
You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah. 13You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the evil To lay him open from thigh to neck. Selah.
You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition. 14You pierced with his own spears The head of his throngs. They stormed in to scatter us; Their exultation was like those Who devour the oppressed in secret.
But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. 15You trampled on the sea with Your horses, On the surge of many waters.
I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us. 16I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered. Decay enters my bones, And in my place I tremble. Because I must wait quietly for the day of distress, For the people to arise who will invade us.
When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, 17Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls,
I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! 18Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) 19The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.
