A long time passed after the LORD made Israel secure from all their enemies, and Joshua was very old.1A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, Joshua was old, getting on in years.
So Joshua summoned all Israel, including the elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and told them: "I am very old.2So Joshua summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and said to them, "I am old, getting on in years,
You saw everything the LORD your God did to all these nations on your behalf, for the LORD your God fights for you.3and you have seen for yourselves everything the LORD your God did to all these nations on your account, because it was the LORD your God who was fighting for you.
See, I have parceled out to your tribes these remaining nations, from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the nations I defeated.4See, I have allotted these remaining nations to you as an inheritance for your tribes, including all the nations I have destroyed, from the Jordan westward to the Mediterranean Sea.
The LORD your God will drive them out from before you and remove them, so you can occupy their land as the LORD your God promised you.5The LORD your God will force them back on your account and drive them out before you so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you."
Be very strong! Carefully obey all that is written in the law scroll of Moses so you won't swerve from it to the right or the left,6Be very strong and continue obeying all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you do not turn from it to the right or left
or associate with these nations that remain near you. You must not invoke or make solemn declarations by the names of their gods! You must not worship or bow down to them!7and so that you do not associate with these nations remaining among you. Do not call on the names of their gods or make an oath to them; do not worship them or bow down to them.
But you must be loyal to the LORD your God, as you have been to this very day. 8Instead, remain faithful to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day."
"The LORD drove out from before you great and mighty nations; no one has been able to resist you to this very day.9The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and no one is able to stand against you to this day.
One of you makes a thousand run away, for the LORD your God fights for you as he promised you he would.10One of you routed a thousand because the LORD your God was fighting for you, as He promised.
Watch yourselves carefully! Love the LORD your God!11So be very diligent to love the LORD your God for your own well-being.
But if you ever turn away and make alliances with these nations that remain near you, and intermarry with them and establish friendly relations with them,12For if you turn away and cling to the rest of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry or associate with them and they with you,
know for certain that the LORD our God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. They will trap and ensnare you; they will be a whip that tears your sides and thorns that blind your eyes until you disappear from this good land the LORD your God gave you. 13know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive these nations out before you. They will become a snare and a trap for you, a scourge for your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you disappear from this good land the LORD your God has given you."
"Look, today I am about to die. You know with all your heart and being that not even one of all the faithful promises the LORD your God made to you is left unfulfilled; every one was realized--not one promise is unfulfilled!14I am now going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart and all your soul that none of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
But in the same way every faithful promise the LORD your God made to you has been realized, it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the LORD will bring on you every judgment until he destroys you from this good land which the LORD your God gave you.15Since every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come about, so He will bring on you every bad thing until He has annihilated you from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
If you violate the covenantal laws of the LORD your God which he commanded you to keep, and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, the LORD will be very angry with you and you will disappear quickly from the good land which he gave to you." 16If you break the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and worship other gods, and bow down to them, the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land He has given you."
