A long time passed after the LORD made Israel secure from all their enemies, and Joshua was very old.1The years passed, and the LORD had given the people of Israel rest from all their enemies. Joshua, who was now very old,
So Joshua summoned all Israel, including the elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and told them: "I am very old.2called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. He said to them, “I am now a very old man.
You saw everything the LORD your God did to all these nations on your behalf, for the LORD your God fights for you.3You have seen everything the LORD your God has done for you during my lifetime. The LORD your God has fought for you against your enemies.
See, I have parceled out to your tribes these remaining nations, from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the nations I defeated.4I have allotted to you as your homeland all the land of the nations yet unconquered, as well as the land of those we have already conquered—from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
The LORD your God will drive them out from before you and remove them, so you can occupy their land as the LORD your God promised you.5This land will be yours, for the LORD your God will himself drive out all the people living there now. You will take possession of their land, just as the LORD your God promised you.
Be very strong! Carefully obey all that is written in the law scroll of Moses so you won't swerve from it to the right or the left,6“So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left.
or associate with these nations that remain near you. You must not invoke or make solemn declarations by the names of their gods! You must not worship or bow down to them!7Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them.
But you must be loyal to the LORD your God, as you have been to this very day. 8Rather, cling tightly to the LORD your God as you have done until now.
"The LORD drove out from before you great and mighty nations; no one has been able to resist you to this very day.9“For the LORD has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you.
One of you makes a thousand run away, for the LORD your God fights for you as he promised you he would.10Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the LORD your God fights for you, just as he has promised.
Watch yourselves carefully! Love the LORD your God!11So be very careful to love the LORD your God.
But if you ever turn away and make alliances with these nations that remain near you, and intermarry with them and establish friendly relations with them,12“But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them,
know for certain that the LORD our God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. They will trap and ensnare you; they will be a whip that tears your sides and thorns that blind your eyes until you disappear from this good land the LORD your God gave you. 13then know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
"Look, today I am about to die. You know with all your heart and being that not even one of all the faithful promises the LORD your God made to you is left unfulfilled; every one was realized--not one promise is unfulfilled!14“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the LORD your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!
But in the same way every faithful promise the LORD your God made to you has been realized, it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the LORD will bring on you every judgment until he destroys you from this good land which the LORD your God gave you.15But as surely as the LORD your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him. He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you.
If you violate the covenantal laws of the LORD your God which he commanded you to keep, and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, the LORD will be very angry with you and you will disappear quickly from the good land which he gave to you." 16If you break the covenant of the LORD your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”
