NET BibleNew International Version
The intentions of the heart belong to a man, but the answer of the tongue comes from the LORD. 1To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the LORD comes the proper answer of the tongue.
All a person's ways seem right in his own opinion, but the LORD evaluates the motives. 2All a person's ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.
Commit your works to the LORD, and your plans will be established. 3Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
The LORD works everything for its own ends--even the wicked for the day of disaster. 4The LORD works out everything to its proper end-- even the wicked for a day of disaster.
The LORD abhors every arrogant person; rest assured that they will not go unpunished. 5The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.
Through loyal love and truth iniquity is appeased; through fearing the LORD one avoids evil. 6Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided.
When a person's ways are pleasing to the LORD, he even reconciles his enemies to himself. 7When the LORD takes pleasure in anyone's way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.
Better to have a little with righteousness than to have abundant income without justice. 8Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
A person plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps. 9In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
The divine verdict is in the words of the king, his pronouncements must not act treacherously against justice. 10The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth does not betray justice.
Honest scales and balances are from the LORD; all the weights in the bag are his handiwork. 11Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making.
Doing wickedness is an abomination to kings, because a throne is established in righteousness. 12Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness.
The delight of kings is righteous counsel, and they love the one who speaks uprightly. 13Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right.
A king's wrath is like a messenger of death, but a wise person appeases it. 14A king's wrath is a messenger of death, but the wise will appease it.
In the light of the king's face there is life, and his favor is like the clouds of the spring rain. 15When a king's face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.
How much better it is to acquire wisdom than gold; to acquire understanding is more desirable than silver. 16How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!
The highway of the upright is to turn away from evil; the one who guards his way safeguards his life. 17The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives.
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. 18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
It is better to be lowly in spirit with the afflicted than to share the spoils with the proud. 19Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.
The one who deals wisely in a matter will find success, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD. 20Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.
The one who is wise in heart is called discerning, and kind speech increases persuasiveness. 21The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.
Insight is like a life-giving fountain to the one who possesses it, but folly leads to the discipline of fools. 22Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent, but folly brings punishment to fools.
A wise person's heart makes his speech wise and it adds persuasiveness to his words. 23The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. 24Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way that leads to death. 25There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
A laborer's appetite works on his behalf, for his hunger urges him to work. 26The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on.
A wicked scoundrel digs up evil, and his slander is like a scorching fire. 27A scoundrel plots evil, and on their lips it is like a scorching fire.
A perverse person spreads dissension, and a gossip separates the closest friends. 28A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.
A violent person entices his neighbor, and leads him down a path that is terrible. 29A violent person entices their neighbor and leads them down a path that is not good.
The one who winks his eyes devises perverse things, and one who compresses his lips brings about evil. 30Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity; whoever purses their lips is bent on evil.
Gray hair is like a crown of glory; it is attained in the path of righteousness. 31Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.
Better to be slow to anger than to be a mighty warrior, and one who controls his temper is better than one who captures a city. 32Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.
The dice are thrown into the lap, but their every decision is from the LORD. 33The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
