Psalm 139
NET Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew Living Translation
For the music director, a psalm of David. O LORD, you examine me and know. 1O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives. 2You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; you are aware of everything I do. 3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.
Certainly my tongue does not frame a word without you, O LORD, being thoroughly aware of it. 4You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD.
You squeeze me in from behind and in front; you place your hand on me. 5You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension; it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
Where can I go to escape your spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? 7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, 9If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me. 10even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
If I were to say, "Certainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me," 11I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
even the darkness is not too dark for you to see, and the night is as bright as day; darkness and light are the same to you. 12but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
Certainly you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother's womb. 13You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing. You knew me thoroughly; 14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
my bones were not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and sewed together in the depths of the earth. 15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb. All the days ordained for me were recorded in your scroll before one of them came into existence. 16You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God! How vast is their sum total! 17How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!
If I tried to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Even if I finished counting them, I would still have to contend with you. 18I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!
If only you would kill the wicked, O God! Get away from me, you violent men! 19O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers!
They rebel against you and act deceitfully; your enemies lie. 20They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name.
O LORD, do I not hate those who hate you, and despise those who oppose you? 21O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?
I absolutely hate them, they have become my enemies! 22Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.
Examine me, and probe my thoughts! Test me, and know my concerns! 23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any idolatrous tendency in me, and lead me in the reliable ancient path! 24Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
