After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.1After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.
He said:2And this is what he said:
"May the day of my birth perish, and the night that said, 'A boy is conceived!'3“May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, ‘A boy is conceived.’
That day--may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine on it.4If only that day had turned to darkness! May God above disregard it; may no light shine upon it.
May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it.5May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day overwhelm it.
That night--may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months.6If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year; may it never be entered in any of the months.
May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it.7Behold, may that night be barren; may no joyful voice come into it.
May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.8May it be cursed by those who curse the day—those prepared to rouse Leviathan.
May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn,9May its morning stars grow dark; may it wait in vain for daylight; may it not see the breaking of dawn.
for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.10For that night did not shut the doors of the womb to hide the sorrow from my eyes.
"Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?11Why did I not perish at birth; why did I not die as I came from the womb?
Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?12Why were there knees to receive me, and breasts that I should be nursed?
For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest13For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest
with kings and rulers of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves cities now in ruins,
with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?16Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, like an infant who never sees daylight?
There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest.17There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary find rest.
Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's shout.18The captives enjoy their ease; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor.
The small and the great are there, and the slaves are freed from their owners.19Both small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master.
"Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul,20Why is light given to the miserable, and life to the bitter of soul,
to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure,21who long for death that does not come, and search for it like hidden treasure,
who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave?22who rejoice and greatly exult when they can find the grave?
Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?23Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water.24I sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.
What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.25For the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has befallen me.
I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil."26I am not at ease or quiet; I have no rest, for trouble has come.”
