After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,12After the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah fathered Salathiel, Salathiel fathered Zerubbabel,

Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.17So all the generations from Abraham to David totaled fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon totaled fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah there were fourteen generations.
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her secretly.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.20After he had thought about it, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," he said, "don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:22Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said,
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").23"See, a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means, "God with us."
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.24When Joseph got up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary as his wife.
But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.25He did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.
