When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples and, after encouraging them, said goodbye and set out for Macedonia.1And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia.
He traveled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people, and finally arrived in Greece,2And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece,
where he stayed three months. Because some Jews had plotted against him just as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia.3And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy also, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.4And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas.5These going before tarried for us at Troas.
But we sailed from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread, and five days later joined the others at Troas, where we stayed seven days.6And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days.
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.8And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.
Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.9And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. "Don't be alarmed," he said. "He's alive!"10And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.
Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left.11When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.
The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.12And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
We went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we were going to take Paul aboard. He had made this arrangement because he was going there on foot.13And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot.
When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.14And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.
The next day we set sail from there and arrived off Chios. The day after that we crossed over to Samos, and on the following day arrived at Miletus.15And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia, for he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.16For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church.17And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.
When they arrived, he said to them: "You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia.18And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,
I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.19Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.20And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.21Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
"And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.22And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:
I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.23Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace.24But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
"Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again.25And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.
Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.26Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.27For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.28Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.29For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.30Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.31Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
"Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.32And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.33I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel.
You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.34Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "35I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.36And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him.37And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him,
What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.38Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.
