New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
In the ninth year, in the tenth month on the tenth day, the word of the LORD came to me:1And the word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying,
"Son of man, record this date, this very date, because the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.2"Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.
Tell this rebellious people a parable and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'Put on the cooking pot; put it on and pour water into it.3"Speak a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Put on the pot, put it on and also pour water in it;
Put into it the pieces of meat, all the choice pieces--the leg and the shoulder. Fill it with the best of these bones;4Put in it the pieces, Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; Fill it with choice bones.
take the pick of the flock. Pile wood beneath it for the bones; bring it to a boil and cook the bones in it.5"Take the choicest of the flock, And also pile wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also seethe its bones in it."
"'For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'Woe to the city of bloodshed, to the pot now encrusted, whose deposit will not go away! Take the meat out piece by piece in whatever order it comes.6'Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the bloody city, To the pot in which there is rust And whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, Without making a choice.
"'For the blood she shed is in her midst: She poured it on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground, where the dust would cover it.7"For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the ground To cover it with dust.
To stir up wrath and take revenge I put her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.8"That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, That it may not be covered."
"'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'Woe to the city of bloodshed! I, too, will pile the wood high.9'Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.
So heap on the wood and kindle the fire. Cook the meat well, mixing in the spices; and let the bones be charred.10"Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, Boil the flesh well And mix in the spices, And let the bones be burned.
Then set the empty pot on the coals till it becomes hot and its copper glows, so that its impurities may be melted and its deposit burned away.11"Then set it empty on its coals So that it may be hot And its bronze may glow And its filthiness may be melted in it, Its rust consumed.
It has frustrated all efforts; its heavy deposit has not been removed, not even by fire.12"She has wearied Me with toil, Yet her great rust has not gone from her; Let her rust be in the fire!
"'Now your impurity is lewdness. Because I tried to cleanse you but you would not be cleansed from your impurity, you will not be clean again until my wrath against you has subsided.13"In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have spent My wrath on you.
"'I the LORD have spoken. The time has come for me to act. I will not hold back; I will not have pity, nor will I relent. You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions, declares the Sovereign LORD.'"14"I, the LORD, have spoken; it is coming and I will act. I will not relent, and I will not pity and I will not be sorry; according to your ways and according to your deeds I will judge you," declares the Lord GOD.'"
The word of the LORD came to me:15And the word of the LORD came to me saying,
"Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears.16"Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a blow; but you shall not mourn and you shall not weep, and your tears shall not come.
Groan quietly; do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban fastened and your sandals on your feet; do not cover your mustache and beard or eat the customary food of mourners."17"Groan silently; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your shoes on your feet, and do not cover your mustache and do not eat the bread of men."
So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded.18So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded.
Then the people asked me, "Won't you tell us what these things have to do with us? Why are you acting like this?"19The people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things that you are doing mean for us?"
So I said to them, "The word of the LORD came to me:20Then I said to them, "The word of the LORD came to me saying,
Say to the people of Israel, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary--the stronghold in which you take pride, the delight of your eyes, the object of your affection. The sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.21'Speak to the house of Israel, "Thus says the Lord GOD, 'Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes and the delight of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.
And you will do as I have done. You will not cover your mustache and beard or eat the customary food of mourners.22You will do as I have done; you will not cover your mustache and you will not eat the bread of men.
You will keep your turbans on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep but will waste away because of your sins and groan among yourselves.23'Your turbans will be on your heads and your shoes on your feet. You will not mourn and you will not weep, but you will rot away in your iniquities and you will groan to one another.
Ezekiel will be a sign to you; you will do just as he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.'24'Thus Ezekiel will be a sign to you; according to all that he has done you will do; when it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.'"
"And you, son of man, on the day I take away their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes, their heart's desire, and their sons and daughters as well--25As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their stronghold, the joy of their pride, the desire of their eyes and their heart's delight, their sons and their daughters,
on that day a fugitive will come to tell you the news.26that on that day he who escapes will come to you with information for your ears?
At that time your mouth will be opened; you will speak with him and will no longer be silent. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD."27'On that day your mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and be mute no longer. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD.'"
