New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
Then Job replied:1Then Job responded,
"How long will you torment me and crush me with words?2"How long will you torment me And crush me with words?
Ten times now you have reproached me; shamelessly you attack me.3"These ten times you have insulted me; You are not ashamed to wrong me.
If it is true that I have gone astray, my error remains my concern alone.4"Even if I have truly erred, My error lodges with me.
If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my humiliation against me,5"If indeed you vaunt yourselves against me And prove my disgrace to me,
then know that God has wronged me and drawn his net around me.6Know then that God has wronged me And has closed His net around me.
"Though I cry, 'Violence!' I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice.7"Behold, I cry, 'Violence!' but I get no answer; I shout for help, but there is no justice.
He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness.8"He has walled up my way so that I cannot pass, And He has put darkness on my paths.
He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.9"He has stripped my honor from me And removed the crown from my head.
He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree.10"He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone; And He has uprooted my hope like a tree.
His anger burns against me; he counts me among his enemies.11"He has also kindled His anger against me And considered me as His enemy.
His troops advance in force; they build a siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent.12"His troops come together, And build up their way against me And camp around my tent.
"He has alienated my family from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.13"He has removed my brothers far from me, And my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.
My relatives have gone away; my closest friends have forgotten me.14"My relatives have failed, And my intimate friends have forgotten me.
My guests and my female servants count me a foreigner; they look on me as on a stranger.15"Those who live in my house and my maids consider me a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight.
I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.16"I call to my servant, but he does not answer; I have to implore him with my mouth.
My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own family.17"My breath is offensive to my wife, And I am loathsome to my own brothers.
Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.18"Even young children despise me; I rise up and they speak against me.
All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.19"All my associates abhor me, And those I love have turned against me.
I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.20"My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, And I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.
"Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.21"Pity me, pity me, O you my friends, For the hand of God has struck me.
Why do you pursue me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?22"Why do you persecute me as God does, And are not satisfied with my flesh?
"Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll,23"Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book!
that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever!24"That with an iron stylus and lead They were engraved in the rock forever!
I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.25"As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth.
And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God;26"Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God;
I myself will see him with my own eyes--I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!27Whom I myself shall behold, And whom my eyes will see and not another. My heart faints within me!
"If you say, 'How we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him,'28"If you say, 'How shall we persecute him?' And 'What pretext for a case against him can we find?'
you should fear the sword yourselves; for wrath will bring punishment by the sword, and then you will know that there is judgment."29"Then be afraid of the sword for yourselves, For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, So that you may know there is judgment."
