New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
An attacker advances against you, Nineveh. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength!1The one who scatters has come up against you. Man the fortress, watch the road; Strengthen your back, summon all your strength.
The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.2For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel, Even though devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches.
The shields of the soldiers are red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready; the spears of juniper are brandished.3The shields of his mighty men are colored red, The warriors are dressed in scarlet, The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel When he is prepared to march, And the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning.4The chariots race madly in the streets, They rush wildly in the squares, Their appearance is like torches, They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
Nineveh summons her picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place.5He remembers his nobles; They stumble in their march, They hurry to her wall, And the mantelet is set up.
The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.6The gates of the rivers are opened And the palace is dissolved.
It is decreed that Nineveh be exiled and carried away. Her female slaves moan like doves and beat on their breasts.7It is fixed: She is stripped, she is carried away, And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves, Beating on their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. "Stop! Stop!" they cry, but no one turns back.8Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Now they are fleeing; "Stop, stop," But no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The supply is endless, the wealth from all its treasures!9Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no limit to the treasure-- Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale.10She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste! Hearts are melting and knees knocking! Also anguish is in the whole body And all their faces are grown pale!
Where now is the lions' den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?11Where is the den of the lions And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness and lion's cub prowled, With nothing to disturb them?
The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.12The lion tore enough for his cubs, Killed enough for his lionesses, And filled his lairs with prey And his dens with torn flesh.
"I am against you," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard."13"Behold, I am against you," declares the LORD of hosts. "I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard."
