The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:1Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
"Take a census of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families.2"Take a census of the descendants of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' households,
Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.3from thirty years and upward, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the tent of meeting.
"This is the work of the Kohathites at the tent of meeting: the care of the most holy things.4"This is the work of the descendants of Kohath in the tent of meeting, concerning the most holy things.
When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and put it over the ark of the covenant law.5"When the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and they shall take down the veil of the screen and cover the ark of the testimony with it;
Then they are to cover the curtain with a durable leather, spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles in place.6and they shall lay a covering of porpoise skin on it, and shall spread over it a cloth of pure blue, and shall insert its poles.
"Over the table of the Presence they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings; the bread that is continually there is to remain on it.7"Over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall also spread a cloth of blue and put on it the dishes and the pans and the sacrificial bowls and the jars for the drink offering, and the continual bread shall be on it.
They are to spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.8"They shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet material, and cover the same with a covering of porpoise skin, and they shall insert its poles.
"They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand that is for light, together with its lamps, its wick trimmers and trays, and all its jars for the olive oil used to supply it.9"Then they shall take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand for the light, along with its lamps and its snuffers, and its trays and all its oil vessels, by which they serve it;
Then they are to wrap it and all its accessories in a covering of the durable leather and put it on a carrying frame.10and they shall put it and all its utensils in a covering of porpoise skin, and shall put it on the carrying bars.
"Over the gold altar they are to spread a blue cloth and cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.11"Over the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth and cover it with a covering of porpoise skin, and shall insert its poles;
"They are to take all the articles used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with the durable leather and put them on a carrying frame.12and they shall take all the utensils of service, with which they serve in the sanctuary, and put them in a blue cloth and cover them with a covering of porpoise skin, and put them on the carrying bars.
"They are to remove the ashes from the bronze altar and spread a purple cloth over it.13"Then they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it.
Then they are to place on it all the utensils used for ministering at the altar, including the firepans, meat forks, shovels and sprinkling bowls. Over it they are to spread a covering of the durable leather and put the poles in place.14"They shall also put on it all its utensils by which they serve in connection with it: the firepans, the forks and shovels and the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread a cover of porpoise skin over it and insert its poles.
"After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, only then are the Kohathites to come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die. The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the tent of meeting.15"When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, so that they will not touch the holy objects and die. These are the things in the tent of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.
"Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles."16"The responsibility of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is the oil for the light and the fragrant incense and the continual grain offering and the anointing oil-- the responsibility of all the tabernacle and of all that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings."
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,17Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
"See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites.18"Do not let the tribe of the families of the Kohathites be cut off from among the Levites.
So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry.19"But do this to them that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy objects: Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign each of them to his work and to his load;
But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die."20but they shall not go in to see the holy objects even for a moment, or they will die."
The LORD said to Moses,21Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
"Take a census also of the Gershonites by their families and clans.22"Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' households, by their families;
Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.23from thirty years and upward to fifty years old, you shall number them; all who enter to perform the service to do the work in the tent of meeting.
"This is the service of the Gershonite clans in their carrying and their other work:24"This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in carrying:
They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, that is, the tent of meeting, its covering and its outer covering of durable leather, the curtains for the entrance to the tent of meeting,25they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with its covering and the covering of porpoise skin that is on top of it, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,
the curtains of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard, the ropes and all the equipment used in the service of the tent. The Gershonites are to do all that needs to be done with these things.26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the gate of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords and all the equipment for their service; and all that is to be done, they shall perform.
All their service, whether carrying or doing other work, is to be done under the direction of Aaron and his sons. You shall assign to them as their responsibility all they are to carry.27"All the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their loads and in all their work, shall be performed at the command of Aaron and his sons; and you shall assign to them as a duty all their loads.
This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the tent of meeting. Their duties are to be under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.28"This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their duties shall be under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
"Count the Merarites by their clans and families.29"As for the sons of Merari, you shall number them by their families, by their fathers' households;
Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.30from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the service to do the work of the tent of meeting.
As part of all their service at the tent, they are to carry the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases,31"Now this is the duty of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle and its bars and its pillars and its sockets,
as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, ropes, all their equipment and everything related to their use. Assign to each man the specific things he is to carry.32and the pillars around the court and their sockets and their pegs and their cords, with all their equipment and with all their service; and you shall assign each man by name the items he is to carry.
This is the service of the Merarite clans as they work at the tent of meeting under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest."33"This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the tent of meeting, under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest."
Moses, Aaron and the leaders of the community counted the Kohathites by their clans and families.34So Moses and Aaron and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families and by their fathers' households,
All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting,35from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tent of meeting.
counted by clans, were 2,750.36Their numbered men by their families were 2,750.
This was the total of all those in the Kohathite clans who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the LORD's command through Moses.37These are the numbered men of the Kohathite families, everyone who was serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD through Moses.
The Gershonites were counted by their clans and families.38The numbered men of the sons of Gershon by their families and by their fathers' households,
All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting,39from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tent of meeting.
counted by their clans and families, were 2,630.40Their numbered men by their families, by their fathers' households, were 2,630.
This was the total of those in the Gershonite clans who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the LORD's command.41These are the numbered men of the families of the sons of Gershon, everyone who was serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD.
The Merarites were counted by their clans and families.42The numbered men of the families of the sons of Merari by their families, by their fathers' households,
All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting,43from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tent of meeting.
counted by their clans, were 3,200.44Their numbered men by their families were 3,200.
This was the total of those in the Merarite clans. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the LORD's command through Moses.45These are the numbered men of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD through Moses.
So Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted all the Levites by their clans and families.46All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel numbered, by their families and by their fathers' households,
All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to do the work of serving and carrying the tent of meeting47from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who could enter to do the work of service and the work of carrying in the tent of meeting.
numbered 8,580.48Their numbered men were 8,580.
At the LORD's command through Moses, each was assigned his work and told what to carry. Thus they were counted, as the LORD commanded Moses.49According to the commandment of the LORD through Moses, they were numbered, everyone by his serving or carrying; thus these were his numbered men, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
