Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.1The LORD visited Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised.
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.2So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.
Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.3Abraham named his son--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.5(Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.)
Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."6Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."
And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."7She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!"
The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.8The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,9But Sarah noticed the son of Hagar the Egyptian--the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham--mocking.
and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."10So she said to Abraham, "Banish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!"
The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.11Sarah's demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son.
But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.12But God said to Abraham, "Do not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted.
I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring."13But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too."
Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.14Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.15When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs.
Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there, she began to sob.16Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot away; for she thought, "I refuse to watch the child die." So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably.
God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.17But God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy's voice right where he is crying.
Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."18Get up! Help the boy up and hold him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."
Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.19Then God enabled Hagar to see a well of water. She went over and filled the skin with water, and then gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.20God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer.
While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.21He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother found a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.22At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in all that you do.
Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you."23Now swear to me right here in God's name that you will not deceive me, my children, or my descendants. Show me, and the land where you are staying, the same loyalty that I have shown you."
Abraham said, "I swear it."24Abraham said, "I swear to do this."
Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek's servants had seized.25But Abraham lodged a complaint against Abimelech concerning a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.
But Abimelek said, "I don't know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today."26"I do not know who has done this thing," Abimelech replied. "Moreover, you did not tell me. I did not hear about it until today."
So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.27Abraham took some sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech. The two of them made a treaty.
Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,28Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock by themselves.
and Abimelek asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"29Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?"
He replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well."30He replied, "You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof that I dug this well."
So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.31That is why he named that place Beer Sheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.32So they made a treaty at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines.
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the LORD, the eternal God.
And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.34So Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for quite some time.
