New International VersionNew Living Translation
Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.1The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised.
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.2She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.
Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.3And Abraham named their son Isaac.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.4Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.5Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.
Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."6And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.
And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."7Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!” Hagar and Ishmael Are Sent Away
The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.8When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.
But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,9But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.
and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."10So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”
The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.11This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.
But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.12But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.
I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring."13But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.”
Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.14So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.15When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush.
Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there, she began to sob.16Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears.
God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.17But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."18Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.”
Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.19Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.20And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,
While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.21and he settled in the wilderness of Paran. His mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt. Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech
At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.22About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.
Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you."23“Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.”
Abraham said, "I swear it."24Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!”
Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek's servants had seized.25Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken by force from Abraham’s servants.
But Abimelek said, "I don't know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today."26“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Abimelech answered. “I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before.”
So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.27Abraham then gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty.
Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,28But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves.
and Abimelek asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"29Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?”
He replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well."30Abraham replied, “Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well.”
So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.31Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.
After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.32After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines.
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.33Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the LORD, the Eternal God.
And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.34And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time.
