“Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers.1You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers.
And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.2Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.3He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.5So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
“Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.6Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks and fountains and springs that flow through the valleys and hills;
a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;
a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.9a land where you will eat food without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.
When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.10When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you.
“Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today,11Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day.
lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;12Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell,
and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;13and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied,
when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;14then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;15He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness with its venomous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.
who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—16He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.
then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’17You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.”
“And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.18But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.
Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.19If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.
As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.20Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
