Deuteronomy 8
NKJV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New King James VersionNew International Version
“Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers.1Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.
And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.2Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.3He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.4Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.5Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
“Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.6Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;
a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;8a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;
a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.9a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.10When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
“Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today,11Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;12Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,
and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;13and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,
when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;15He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—16He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’17You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."
“And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.18But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.19If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.20Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
