There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.1Ἦν δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων Νικόδημος ὄνομα αὐτῷ ἄρχων τῶν Ἰουδαίων
This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”2οὗτος ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἐλήλυθας διδάσκαλος οὐδεὶς γὰρ δύναται ταῦτα τὰ σημεῖα ποιεῖν σὺ ποιεῖς ἐὰν μὴ Θεὸς μετ’ αὐτοῦ
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”3Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν οὐ δύναται ἰδεῖν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”4Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν Νικόδημος Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος γεννηθῆναι γέρων ὤν μὴ δύναται εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ δεύτερον εἰσελθεῖν καὶ γεννηθῆναι
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.5Ἀπεκρίθη (ὁ) Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ Πνεύματος οὐ δύναται εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.6τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς σάρξ ἐστιν καὶ τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τοῦ Πνεύματος πνεῦμά ἐστιν
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’7μὴ θαυμάσῃς ὅτι εἶπόν σοι Δεῖ ὑμᾶς γεννηθῆναι ἄνωθεν
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”8τὸ πνεῦμα ὅπου θέλει πνεῖ καὶ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ ἀκούεις ἀλλ’ οὐκ οἶδας πόθεν ἔρχεται καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγει οὕτως ἐστὶν πᾶς γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ Πνεύματος
Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”9Ἀπεκρίθη Νικόδημος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πῶς δύναται ταῦτα γενέσθαι
Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?10Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ διδάσκαλος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ταῦτα οὐ γινώσκεις
Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.11ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι οἴδαμεν λαλοῦμεν καὶ ἑωράκαμεν μαρτυροῦμεν καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἡμῶν οὐ λαμβάνετε
If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?12Εἰ τὰ ἐπίγεια εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε πῶς ἐὰν εἴπω ὑμῖν τὰ ἐπουράνια πιστεύσετε
No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.13καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναβέβηκεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εἰ μὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ⧼ὁ ὢν ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ⧽
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,14καὶ καθὼς Μωϋσῆς ὕψωσεν τὸν ὄφιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ οὕτως ὑψωθῆναι δεῖ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.15ἵνα πᾶς πιστεύων ἐν αὐτῷ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.16Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον ὥστε τὸν Υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν ἵνα πᾶς πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται ἀλλ’ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.17οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν Θεὸς τὸν Υἱὸν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον ἀλλ’ ἵνα σωθῇ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.18 πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν οὐ κρίνεται ‹δὲ› μὴ πιστεύων ἤδη κέκριται ὅτι μὴ πεπίστευκεν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ μονογενοῦς Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.19Αὕτη δέ ἐστιν κρίσις ὅτι τὸ φῶς ἐλήλυθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον καὶ ἠγάπησαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι μᾶλλον τὸ σκότος τὸ φῶς ἦν γὰρ αὐτῶν πονηρὰ τὰ ἔργα
For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.20πᾶς γὰρ φαῦλα πράσσων μισεῖ τὸ φῶς καὶ οὐκ ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς ἵνα μὴ ἐλεγχθῇ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ
But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”21 δὲ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς ἵνα φανερωθῇ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα ὅτι ἐν Θεῷ ἐστιν εἰργασμένα
After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and baptized.22Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν γῆν καὶ ἐκεῖ διέτριβεν μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβάπτιζεν
Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.23Ἦν δὲ καὶ ‹ὁ› Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν Αἰνὼν ἐγγὺς τοῦ Σαλείμ ὅτι ὕδατα πολλὰ ἦν ἐκεῖ καὶ παρεγίνοντο καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο
For John had not yet been thrown into prison.24οὔπω γὰρ ἦν βεβλημένος εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν ‹ὁ› Ἰωάννης
Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification.25Ἐγένετο οὖν ζήτησις ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου μετὰ Ἰουδαίου περὶ καθαρισμοῦ
And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”26καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί ὃς ἦν μετὰ σοῦ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου σὺ μεμαρτύρηκας ἴδε οὗτος βαπτίζει καὶ πάντες ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτόν
John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.27Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωάννης καὶ εἶπεν Οὐ δύναται ἄνθρωπος λαμβάνειν ‹οὐδὲ ἓν› ἐὰν μὴ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’28αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς μοι μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι εἶπον [ὅτι] Οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ Χριστός ἀλλ’ ὅτι Ἀπεσταλμένος εἰμὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐκείνου
He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.29 ἔχων τὴν νύμφην νυμφίος ἐστίν δὲ φίλος τοῦ νυμφίου ἑστηκὼς καὶ ἀκούων αὐτοῦ χαρᾷ χαίρει διὰ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ νυμφίου αὕτη οὖν χαρὰ ἐμὴ πεπλήρωται
He must increase, but I must decrease.30ἐκεῖνον δεῖ αὐξάνειν ἐμὲ δὲ ἐλαττοῦσθαι
He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.31 ἄνωθεν ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν ὢν ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐστιν καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς λαλεῖ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν
And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.32 ἑώρακεν καὶ ἤκουσεν τοῦτο μαρτυρεῖ καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν αὐτοῦ οὐδεὶς λαμβάνει
He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.33 λαβὼν αὐτοῦ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἐσφράγισεν ὅτι Θεὸς ἀληθής ἐστιν
For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.34ὃν γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν Θεὸς τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ λαλεῖ οὐ γὰρ ἐκ μέτρου δίδωσιν τὸ Πνεῦμα
The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.35 Πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ τὸν Υἱόν καὶ πάντα δέδωκεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ
He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”36 πιστεύων εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον δὲ ἀπειθῶν τῷ Υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται ζωήν ἀλλ’ ὀργὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ μένει ἐπ’ αὐτόν
