Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.1Some time later, Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.2When Hamor the Hivite's son Shechem, the regional leader, saw her, he grabbed her and raped her, humiliating her.
His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.3He was attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter, since he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”4Then Shechem told his father Hamor, "Get this young woman for me to be my wife."
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came.5Because Jacob learned that Shechem had dishonored his daughter Dinah while his sons were still out with their cattle on the open range, he remained silent until they returned.
Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.6Meanwhile, Shechem's father Hamor arrived to talk to Jacob.
And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.7Just then Jacob's sons arrived from the field. When they heard what had happened, they were distraught with grief and livid with anger toward Shechem, because he had committed a disgraceful deed in Israel by forcing Jacob's daughter to have sex, an act that never should have happened.
But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.8But Hamor said this: "My son is deeply attracted to your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.9Intermarry with us. Give your daughters to us and take our sons for yourselves.
So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”10Live with us anywhere you want. Live, trade, and grow rich in it."
Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.11Shechem also addressed Dinah's father and brothers. He told them, "If you'll just approve me, I'll give whatever you ask of me.
Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”12No matter how big or how extensive your demands are for a dowry and wedding presents from me, I'll provide whatever you ask. Only give me the young lady to be my wife."
But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.13But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceptively, because Shechem had dishonored their sister Dinah.
And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.14They told them, "We can't do this. We can't give our sister to a man who isn't circumcised, because that would be insulting to us.
But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised,15But we'll agree to your request, only if you will become like us by circumcising every male among you.
then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.16Then we'll give our daughters to you and take your daughters for ourselves, live among you, and be as a united people.
But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”17But if you won't listen to us, then we're going to take our daughter and leave."
And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.18What they said pleased Hamor and his son Shechem,
So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.19so the young man did not delay the matter any further, since he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now Shechem was the most important person in his father's household.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:20So Hamor and his son Shechem entered the gate of their city and addressed the men of their city.
“These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.21"These men are at peace with us," they announced. "Therefore, let them live in the land and trade in it. Look! The land is large enough for them. Let's take their daughters as wives for ourselves and let's give our sons to them.
Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.22"However," they added, "only on this condition will the men consent to live with us and be united as a single people with us: every male among us will have to be circumcised just as they are.
Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”23Shouldn't all their cattle, acquisitions, and animals belong to us? So, let's give our consent to them, and then they'll live with us."
And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.24All of the males who heard Hamor and his son Shechem, who had gone out to the city gate, were circumcised.
Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.25Three days later, while they were still in pain, Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah's brothers, each grabbed a sword and entered the city unannounced, intending to kill all the males.
And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out.26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took back Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.27Jacob's other sons came along afterward and plundered the city where their sister had been defiled,
They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field,28seizing all of their flocks, herds, donkeys, and whatever else was in the city or had been left out in the field.
and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.29They carried off all their wealth, their children, and their wives as captives, plundering everything that remained in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”30Then Jacob told Simeon and Levi, "You have certainly stirred up trouble for me! You've made me despised by the Canaanites and the Perizzites who live in this territory. Because I have only a few men with me, they're going to gather themselves together and attack me until I am totally destroyed, along with my entire household!"
But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”31"Should he have treated our sister like a whore?" they asked in response.
