Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.1Now Dinah, Leah's daughter whom she bore to Jacob, went to meet the young women of the land.
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.2When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, who ruled that area, saw her, he grabbed her, forced himself on her, and sexually assaulted her.
His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.3Then he became very attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He fell in love with the young woman and spoke romantically to her.
So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”4Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Acquire this young girl as my wife."
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came.5When Jacob heard that Shechem had violated his daughter Dinah, his sons were with the livestock in the field. So Jacob remained silent until they came in.
Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.6Then Shechem's father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah.
And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.7Now Jacob's sons had come in from the field when they heard the news. They were offended and very angry because Shechem had disgraced Israel by sexually assaulting Jacob's daughter, a crime that should not be committed.
But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.8But Hamor made this appeal to them: "My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.9Intermarry with us. Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves.
So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”10You may live among us, and the land will be open to you. Live in it, travel freely in it, and acquire property in it."
Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.11Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you require of me I'll give.
Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”12You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive, and I'll give whatever you ask of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!"
But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.13Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem had violated their sister Dinah.
And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.14They said to them, "We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for it would be a disgrace to us.
But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised,15We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become like us by circumcising all your males.
then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.16Then we will give you our daughters to marry, and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.
But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”17But if you do not agree to our terms by being circumcised, then we will take our sister and depart."
And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.18Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.
So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.19The young man did not delay in doing what they asked because he wanted Jacob's daughter Dinah badly. (Now he was more important than anyone in his father's household.)
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:20So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city,
“These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.21"These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.
Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.22Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.
Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”23If we do so, won't their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? So let's consent to their demand, so they will live among us."
And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.24All the men who assembled at the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male who assembled at the city gate was circumcised.
Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.25In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and went to the unsuspecting city and slaughtered every male.
And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out.26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.27Jacob's sons killed them and looted the city because their sister had been violated.
They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field,28They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields.
and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.29They captured as plunder all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought ruin on me by making me a foul odor among the inhabitants of the land--among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number; they will join forces against me and attack me, and both I and my family will be destroyed!"
But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”31But Simeon and Levi replied, "Should he treat our sister like a common prostitute?"
