And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:1Later, the LORD told Moses,
“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”2"Be sure to exact vengeance on behalf of the Israelis from the Midianites, after which you'll be taken home to your people."
So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the LORD on Midian.3So Moses instructed the people, "Muster your men of war to attack the Midianites and deliver the LORD'S vengeance against Midian.
A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.”4Send 1,000 men to war from every tribe throughout all of Israel."
So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.5So 1,000 men from every tribe—12,000 from the thousands of Israel—were mustered and equipped for war.
Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand.6Moses sent 1,000 men from every tribe to fight against them, along with Eleazar's son Phinehas, in whose hands were the articles of the sanctuary and trumpets to sound battle alarms.
And they warred against the Midianites, just as the LORD commanded Moses, and they killed all the males.7They fought against the Midianites just as the LORD had commanded Moses, killing every man.
They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.8They executed the five kings of Midian, including Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. They also executed Beor's son Balaam with a sword.
And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods.9After this, the Israelis took captive the Midianite women and children and confiscated as spoils of war all their cattle, livestock, and their goods.
They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts.10They burned every town where they had lived and incinerated all of their encampments.
And they took all the spoil and all the booty—of man and beast.11They took all the booty and plunder, including both humans and animals.
Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.12Then they brought the captives, booty, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the entire community of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River in Jericho.
And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp.13Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp.
But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle.14But Moses became livid with anger at the officers of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds who had returned from servicing in the battle.
And Moses said to them: “Have you kept all the women alive?15"Did you keep all the women alive?" Moses asked them.
Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.16"Look! These women were the same ones who were counseled by Balaam to cause the Israelis to commit a grievous sin against the LORD at Peor. As a result, that plague infected the LORD's community.
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately.17You are to kill every male child and every woman who has had sexual relations with a man.
But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately.18You are to allow the young women who haven't yet had sexual relations with a man to live for yourselves."
And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day.19"Now you are to stay outside the camp for seven days, after which any of you who has killed a person or touched someone who was killed may purify yourselves on the third day. You and your captives will be pure on the seventh day.
Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”20Furthermore, you are to purify every garment—that is, everything made of leather, goat's hair, or containing wood."
Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, “This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses:21Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had gone to battle, "This is the ordinance of the law that the LORD commanded Moses
Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,22concerning anything containing gold, silver, brass, iron, tin, lead,
everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water.23or anything else that can survive a refiner's fire: You are to pass it through fire, after which it will be clean. Then it is to be purified with the water of impurity. Everything that cannot survive a refiner's fire is to be washed in water.
And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.”24Wash your clothes on the seventh day, after which you will be clean. Then you may enter the camp."
Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:25Then the LORD told Moses,
“Count up the plunder that was taken—of man and beast—you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation;26"Take an inventory of the booty that was taken in the battle, both of humans and of animals. Then you, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the fathers of the community
and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.27are to divide the booty between the warriors who went to war and the rest of the community.
And levy a tribute for the LORD on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep;28"After this, you are to exact a tribute for the LORD from the soldiers who went to war, consisting of the tribute earned by one person out of every 500, whether from people, cattle, donkeys, or flocks.
take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the LORD.29You are to take half their share and give it to Eleazar the priest as a raised offering to the LORD.
And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”30Then take half the share of the Israelis, one drawn out of every 50 people, cattle, donkeys, flocks, and from every animal, then give to the descendants of Levi who maintain the service of the LORD's tent."
So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did what the LORD had commanded Moses.
The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,32The goods confiscated in excess of the war implements that the warriors had gathered included 675,000 sheep,
seventy-two thousand cattle,3372,000 cattle,
sixty-one thousand donkeys,3461,000 donkeys, and
and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately.3532,000 women who had not had sexual relations with a man.
And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;36Now half of the share of those who went to war numbered 337,500 sheep,
and the LORD’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.37so the LORD's tribute from the sheep totaled 675.
The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was seventy-two.38The cattle numbered 36,000, so the LORD's tribute totaled 72.
The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD’s tribute was sixty-one.39The donkeys numbered 30,500, so the LORD's tribute totaled 61.
The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was thirty-two persons.40The people numbered 16,000, so the LORD's tribute totaled 32 people.
So Moses gave the tribute which was the LORD’s heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.41Then Moses gave the tribute, a raised offering to the LORD, to Eleazar the priest, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And from the children of Israel’s half, which Moses separated from the men who fought—42From half of the share of the Israelis that Moses had set aside from the soldiers,
now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,43there were 337,500 sheep for the community,
thirty-six thousand cattle,4436,000 cattle,
thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,4530,500 donkeys,
and sixteen thousand persons—46and 16,000 people.
and from the children of Israel’s half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.47Moses took a portion drawn from every 50 Israelis, including from both human and animals, and gave them to the descendants of Levi who maintained the LORD's tent, just as the LORD had commanded him.
Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses;48Then the officers in charge of thousands of soldiers, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds approached Moses
and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing.49and told him, "Your servants took a count of the soldiers who were under our authority. We didn't miss a single man.
Therefore we have brought an offering for the LORD, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”50We've brought offerings to the LORD from whatever each man found—jewel-encrusted gold, anklets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves in the LORD's presence."
So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments.51Then Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them and everything that was fashioned into jewels.
And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.52The gold for the raised offering that they brought to the LORD totaled 16,750 shekels,
(The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)53because every soldier had confiscated war booty for his own use.
And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.54Moses and Eleazar took the gold from the captains of thousands and hundreds and brought it to the Tent of Meeting, to serve as a memorial to the Israelis in the LORD's presence.
