After this it came to pass that David attacked the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines.1Later David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. He took Gath and its surrounding towns away from the Philistines.
Then he defeated Moab, and the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought tribute.2He defeated the Moabites; the Moabites became David's subjects and brought tribute.
And David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his power by the River Euphrates.3David defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah as far as Hamath, when he went to extend his authority to the Euphrates River.
David took from him one thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots.4David seized from him 1,000 chariots, 7,000 charioteers, and 20,000 infantrymen. David cut the hamstrings of all but a hundred of Hadadezer's chariot horses.
When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians.5The Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, but David killed 22,000 of the Arameans.
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. So the LORD preserved David wherever he went.6David placed garrisons in the territory of the Arameans of Damascus; the Arameans became David's subjects and brought tribute. The LORD protected David wherever he campaigned.
And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.7David took the golden shields which Hadadezer's servants had carried and brought them to Jerusalem.
Also from Tibhath and from Chun, cities of Hadadezer, David brought a large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and the articles of bronze.8From Tibhath and Kun, Hadadezer's cities, David took a great deal of bronze. (Solomon used it to make the big bronze basin called "The Sea," the pillars, and other bronze items.
Now when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,9When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah,
he sent Hadoram his son to King David, to greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou); and Hadoram brought with him all kinds of articles of gold, silver, and bronze.10he sent his son Hadoram to King David to extend his best wishes and to pronounce a blessing on him for his victory over Hadadezer, for Tou had been at war with Hadadezer. He also sent various items made of gold, silver, and bronze.
King David also dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold that he had brought from all these nations—from Edom, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from Amalek.11King David dedicated these things to the LORD, along with the silver and gold which he had carried off from all the nations, including Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek.
Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah killed eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.12Abishai son of Zeruiah killed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
He also put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went.13He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. The LORD protected David wherever he campaigned.
So David reigned over all Israel, and administered judgment and justice to all his people.14David reigned over all Israel; he guaranteed justice for all his people.
Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;15Joab son of Zeruiah was commanding general of the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was secretary;
