New King James VersionNew International Version
Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.3Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home."
Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.6He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.7Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts—8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.9Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.
Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they went out and preached that people should repent.12They went out and preached that people should repent.
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
Others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."
But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!”16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"
For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her.17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.
Because John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not;19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,
for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.
Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
He also swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”23And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."
So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”24She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.
Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.29On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."
So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him.33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.35By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.
Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”36Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”37But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”38"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."
Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.39Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.41Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
So they all ate and were filled.42They all ate and were satisfied,
And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.43and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.44The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land.47Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.
Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.48He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,
And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out;49but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”50because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,
For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there.53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,54As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.
ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.55They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.56And wherever he went--into villages, towns or countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
