New King James VersionNew Living Translation
To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Lilies.” A Psalm of David. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.1Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me.2Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can’t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me.
I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.3I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me.
Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it.4Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs on my head. Many enemies try to destroy me with lies, demanding that I give back what I didn’t steal.
O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You.5O God, you know how foolish I am; my sins cannot be hidden from you.
Let not those who wait for You, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel.6Don’t let those who trust in you be ashamed because of me, O Sovereign LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Don’t let me cause them to be humiliated, O God of Israel.
Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face.7For I endure insults for your sake; humiliation is written all over my face.
I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children;8Even my own brothers pretend they don’t know me; they treat me like a stranger.
Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.9Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach.10When I weep and fast, they scoff at me.
I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them.11When I dress in burlap to show sorrow, they make fun of me.
Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards.12I am the favorite topic of town gossip, and all the drunks sing about me.
But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation.13But I keep praying to you, LORD, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation.
Deliver me out of the mire, And let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, And out of the deep waters.14Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me from those who hate me, and pull me from these deep waters.
Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.15Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me.
Hear me, O LORD, for Your lovingkindness is good; Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.16Answer my prayers, O LORD, for your unfailing love is wonderful. Take care of me, for your mercy is so plentiful.
And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in trouble; Hear me speedily.17Don’t hide from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble!
Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; Deliver me because of my enemies.18Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies.
You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; My adversaries are all before You.19You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace. You see all that my enemies are doing.
Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.20Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me.
They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.21But instead, they give me poison for food; they offer me sour wine for my thirst.
Let their table become a snare before them, And their well-being a trap.22Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare and their prosperity become a trap.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see; And make their loins shake continually.23Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually.
Pour out Your indignation upon them, And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.24Pour out your fury on them; consume them with your burning anger.
Let their dwelling place be desolate; Let no one live in their tents.25Let their homes become desolate and their tents be deserted.
For they persecute the ones You have struck, And talk of the grief of those You have wounded.26To the one you have punished, they add insult to injury; they add to the pain of those you have hurt.
Add iniquity to their iniquity, And let them not come into Your righteousness.27Pile their sins up high, and don’t let them go free.
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous.28Erase their names from the Book of Life; don’t let them be counted among the righteous.
But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.29I am suffering and in pain. Rescue me, O God, by your saving power.
I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.30Then I will praise God’s name with singing, and I will honor him with thanksgiving.
This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves.31For this will please the LORD more than sacrificing cattle, more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves.
The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live.32The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged.
For the LORD hears the poor, And does not despise His prisoners.33For the LORD hears the cries of the needy; he does not despise his imprisoned people.
Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them.34Praise him, O heaven and earth, the seas and all that move in them.
For God will save Zion And build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it.35For God will save Jerusalem and rebuild the towns of Judah. His people will live there and settle in their own land.
Also, the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, And those who love His name shall dwell in it.36The descendants of those who obey him will inherit the land, and those who love him will live there in safety.
