Then God gave the people all these instructions :1And God spoke all these words:
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.2“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You must not have any other god but me.3You shall have no other gods before Me.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.4You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.6but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.7You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.8Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
You have six days each week for your ordinary work,9Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.12Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
“You must not murder.13You shall not murder.
“You must not commit adultery.14You shall not commit adultery.
“You must not steal.15You shall not steal.
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.16You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.18When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sounding of the ram’s horn, and the mountain enveloped in smoke, they trembled and stood at a distance.
And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”19“Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said to Moses. “But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”
“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”20“Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him may be before you, to keep you from sinning.”
As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. Proper Use of Altars21And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.22Then the LORD said to Moses, “This is what you are to tell the Israelites: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.23You are not to make any gods alongside Me; you are not to make for yourselves gods of silver or gold.
“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.24You are to make for Me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.25Now if you make an altar of stones for Me, you must not build it with stones shaped by tools; for if you use a chisel on it, you will defile it.
And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.26And you must not go up to My altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.’
