Then God gave the people all these instructions :1God spoke all these words:
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.2"I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
“You must not have any other god but me.3"You shall have no other gods before me.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.4"You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me,
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.6and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.7"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain.
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.8"Remember the Sabbath day to set it apart as holy.
You have six days each week for your ordinary work,9For six days you may labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the resident foreigner who is in your gates.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.12"Honor your father and your mother, that you may live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving to you.
“You must not murder.13"You shall not murder.
“You must not commit adultery.14"You shall not commit adultery.
“You must not steal.15"You shall not steal.
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.16"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor."
When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.18All the people were seeing the thundering and the lightning, and heard the sound of the horn, and saw the mountain smoking--and when the people saw it they trembled with fear and kept their distance.
And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”19They said to Moses, "You speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us, lest we die."
“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”20Moses said to the people, "Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you so that you do not sin."
As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. Proper Use of Altars21The people kept their distance, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.22The LORD said to Moses: "Thus you will tell the Israelites: 'You yourselves have seen that I have spoken with you from heaven.
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.23You must not make gods of silver alongside me, nor make gods of gold for yourselves.
“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.24You must make for me an altar made of earth, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I cause my name to be honored I will come to you and I will bless you.
If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.25If you make me an altar of stone, you must not build it of stones shaped with tools, for if you use your tool on it you have defiled it.
And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.26And you must not go up by steps to my altar, so that your nakedness is not exposed.'
