Then God gave the people all these instructions :1Then God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.2"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You must not have any other god but me.3"You shall have no other gods before Me.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.4"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.5"You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.6but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.7"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.8"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
You have six days each week for your ordinary work,9"Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.10but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.11"For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.12"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
“You must not murder.13"You shall not murder.
“You must not commit adultery.14"You shall not commit adultery.
“You must not steal.15"You shall not steal.
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.16"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.18All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.
And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”19Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die."
“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”20Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin."
As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. Proper Use of Altars21So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.22Then the LORD said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.23You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves.
“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.24'You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.25'If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it.
And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.26'And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, so that your nakedness will not be exposed on it.'
