1A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,1On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:
2“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men2“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
3twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,3You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.
4and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.4And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.
5“These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

16These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”16These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.
17So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,
18and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,18and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,
19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai.19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:
20This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families : Tribe Number Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,50020From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
2121those registered to the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500.
22Simeon 59,30022From the sons of Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

2525those registered to the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650.
26Judah 74,60026From the sons of Judah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

2929those registered to the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400.
30Zebulun 57,40030From the sons of Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
3131those registered to the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400.
32Ephraim son of Joseph 40,50032From the sons of Joseph: From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
3333those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.
34Manasseh son of Joseph 32,20034And from the sons of Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
3535those registered to the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200.
36Benjamin 35,40036From the sons of Benjamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
3737those registered to the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400.
38Dan 62,70038From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
3939those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700.
40Asher 41,50040From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
4141those registered to the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500.
42Naphtali 53,40042From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
4343those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.
44These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.44These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
45They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.45So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
46The total number was 603,550.46And all those counted totaled 603,550.
47But this total did not include the Levites.47The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.
48For the LORD had said to Moses,48For the LORD had said to Moses:
49“Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.49“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.
50Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.50Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.
51Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.
52Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.52The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.
53But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”53But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”
54So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.54Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
