A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said:
“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men2"Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,3You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army.
and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.4One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you.
“These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
Simeon Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”16These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel.
So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,17Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified,
and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,18and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one,

These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.44These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.45All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families.
The total number was 603,550.46The total number was 603,550.
But this total did not include the Levites.47The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others.
For the LORD had said to Moses,48The LORD had said to Moses:
“Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.49"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.
Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.50Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.
Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.
Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.52The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.
But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”53The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law."
So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.54The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
