A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,1In the Sinai desert, the LORD spoke to Moses inside the Tent of Meeting on the first day of the second month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt. He said,
“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men2"Take a census of the entire Israeli community, numbering them by their tribes and by ancestral houses. List the names of every male one-by-one,
twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,3from 20 years and upward. You and Aaron are to register everyone in Israel who is able to go to war, company by company.
and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.4One man from each tribe is to accompany you, each man being the leader of his ancestral house.
“These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur5"Here is a list of names of the men who are to assist you: "From Reuben: Shedeur's son Elizur.

These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”16These men were appointed from within their communities, since they were leaders of their ancestral houses and heads of the tribes of Israel.
So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,17Moses and Aaron gathered these men who had been mentioned by name.
and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,18They assembled the entire community together during the second month. Then they recorded their ancestries, according to their tribes and ancestral houses, as well as the names of the men 20 years old and above individually,

These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.44These individuals were the ones whom Moses and Aaron registered from the twelve leaders of Israel, each person from his ancestral house.
They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.45Everyone was numbered from the descendants of Israel, from their ancestral houses, from all the men who were 20 years and above and who could serve in the army.
The total number was 603,550.46The total of all those who were numbered was 603,550.
But this total did not include the Levites.47The descendants of Levi were not counted according to their ancestral houses
For the LORD had said to Moses,48because the LORD had ordered Moses:
“Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.49"Be sure not to number or count the tribe of Levi with the rest of the Israelis.
Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.50Instead, appoint the descendants of Levi over the Tent of Meeting, all the vessels, and everything in it. They are to carry the tent and all the vessels in it. They are to attend to it and camp around it.
Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.51Whenever the tent is ready for travel, the descendants of Levi are to take it down. When it's time to encamp, the descendants of Levi are to set it up. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be executed.
Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.52Then the Israelis are to encamp around the tent, arranged according to their company and the standard of their army.
But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”53But the descendants of Levi are to encamp on all sides of the Tent of Meeting so that divine wrath won't fall on the congregation of Israel. The descendants of Levi are to take care of the Tent of Meeting."
So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.54The Israelis observed everything that the LORD had commanded Moses, doing exactly what they were told.
