In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.1There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment.
He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.2He was a devout man and feared God along with his whole household. He did many charitable deeds for the Jewish people and always prayed to God.
One afternoon about three o’clock, he had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming toward him. “Cornelius!” the angel said.3About three in the afternoon he distinctly saw in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, "Cornelius!"
Cornelius stared at him in terror. “What is it, sir?” he asked the angel. And the angel replied, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been received by God as an offering!4Looking intently at him, he became afraid and said, "What is it, lord?" The angel told him, "Your prayers and your acts of charity have come up as a memorial offering before God.
Now send some men to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter.5Now send men to Joppa and call for Simon, who is also named Peter.
He is staying with Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.”6He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea."
As soon as the angel was gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of his personal attendants.7When the angel who spoke to him had gone, he called two of his household slaves and a devout soldier, who was one of those who attended him.
He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa. Peter Visits Cornelius8After explaining everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon,9The next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop about noon.
and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.10Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something, he went into a visionary state.
He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.11He saw heaven opened and an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth.
In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.12In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky.
Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”13Then a voice said to him, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat!""
“No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean. ”14No, Lord!" Peter said. "For I have never eaten anything common and ritually unclean!"
But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.”15Again, a second time, a voice said to him, "What God has made clean, you must not call common."
The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.16This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into heaven.
Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean? Just then the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house. Standing outside the gate,17While Peter was deeply perplexed about what the vision he had seen might mean, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions to Simon's house, stood at the gate.
they asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there.18They called out, asking if Simon, who was also named Peter, was lodging there.
Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three men have come looking for you.19While Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit told him, "Three men are here looking for you.
Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. Don’t worry, for I have sent them.”20Get up, go downstairs, and accompany them with no doubts at all, because I have sent them."
So Peter went down and said, “I’m the man you are looking for. Why have you come?”21Then Peter went down to the men and said, "Here I am, the one you're looking for. What is the reason you're here?"
They said, “We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. He is a devout and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jews. A holy angel instructed him to summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.”22They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you."
So Peter invited the men to stay for the night. The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from Joppa.23Peter then invited them in and gave them lodging. The next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went with him.
They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.24The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him.25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.
But Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!”26But Peter helped him up and said, "Stand up! I myself am also a man."
So they talked together and went inside, where many others were assembled.27While talking with him, he went on in and found that many had come together there.
Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.28Peter said to them, "You know it's forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner. But God has shown me that I must not call any person common or unclean.
So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me.”29That's why I came without any objection when I was sent for. So I ask: Why did you send for me?"
Cornelius replied, “Four days ago I was praying in my house about this same time, three o’clock in the afternoon. Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me.30Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this hour, at three in the afternoon, I was praying in my house. Just then a man in a dazzling robe stood before me
He told me, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God!31and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your acts of charity have been remembered in God's sight.
Now send messengers to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.’32Therefore send someone to Joppa and invite Simon here, who is also named Peter. He is lodging in Simon the tanner's house by the sea.'
So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.” The Gentiles Hear the Good News33Therefore I immediately sent for you, and you did the right thing in coming. So we are all present before God, to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord."
Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.34Then Peter began to speak: "Now I really understand that God doesn't show favoritism,
In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.35but in every nation the person who fears Him and does righteousness is acceptable to Him.
This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.36He sent the message to the Israelites, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ--He is Lord of all.
You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism.37You know the events that took place throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached:
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the Devil, because God was with Him.
“And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,39We ourselves are witnesses of everything He did in both the Judean country and in Jerusalem, yet they killed Him by hanging Him on a tree.
but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear,40God raised up this man on the third day and permitted Him to be seen,
not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.41not by all the people, but by us, witnesses appointed beforehand by God, who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.42He commanded us to preach to the people and to solemnly testify that He is the One appointed by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.
He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.” The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit43All the prophets testify about Him that through His name everyone who believes in Him will receive forgiveness of sins."
Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message.
The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,46For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded, "
“Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”47Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"
So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
