1Then Moses and the leaders of Israel gave this charge to the people: “Obey all these commands that I am giving you today.1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, "Keep every command I am giving you today.
2When you cross the Jordan River and enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster.2At the time you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, you must set up large stones and cover them with plaster.
3Write this whole body of instruction on them when you cross the river to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you—a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.3Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
4When you cross the Jordan, set up these stones at Mount Ebal and coat them with plaster, as I am commanding you today.4When you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to cover them with plaster.
5“Then build an altar there to the LORD your God, using natural, uncut stones. You must not shape the stones with an iron tool.5Build an altar of stones there to the LORD your God--you must not use any iron tool on them.
6Build the altar of uncut stones, and use it to offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God.6Use uncut stones to build the altar of the LORD your God and offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God on it.
7Also sacrifice peace offerings on it, and celebrate by feasting there before the LORD your God.7There you are to sacrifice fellowship offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God.
8You must clearly write all these instructions on the stones coated with plaster.”8Write clearly all the words of this law on the plastered stones."
9Then Moses and the Levitical priests addressed all Israel as follows: “O Israel, be quiet and listen! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God.9Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, "Be silent, Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.
10So you must obey the LORD your God by keeping all these commands and decrees that I am giving you today.” Curses from Mount Ebal10Obey the LORD your God and follow His commands and statutes I am giving you today."
11That same day Moses also gave this charge to the people:11On that day Moses commanded the people, "
12“When you cross the Jordan River, the tribes of Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin must stand on Mount Gerizim to proclaim a blessing over the people.12When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
13And the tribes of Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali must stand on Mount Ebal to proclaim a curse.13And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
14“Then the Levites will shout to all the people of Israel:14The Levites will proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite:
15‘Cursed is anyone who carves or casts an idol and secretly sets it up. These idols, the work of craftsmen, are detestable to the LORD.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’15The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.' And all the people will reply, 'Amen!'
16‘Cursed is anyone who dishonors father or mother.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’16The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
17‘Cursed is anyone who steals property from a neighbor by moving a boundary marker.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’17The one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
18‘Cursed is anyone who leads a blind person astray on the road.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’18The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
19‘Cursed is anyone who denies justice to foreigners, orphans, or widows.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’19The one who denies justice to a foreigner, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
20‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with one of his father’s wives, for he has violated his father.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’20The one who sleeps with his father's wife is cursed, for he has violated his father's marriage bed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
21‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with an animal.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’21The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
22‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with his sister, whether she is the daughter of his father or his mother.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’22The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
23‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’23The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
24‘Cursed is anyone who attacks a neighbor in secret.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’24The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
25‘Cursed is anyone who accepts payment to kill an innocent person.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’25The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
26‘Cursed is anyone who does not affirm and obey the terms of these instructions.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’26Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'"
