When Rehoboam arrived at Jerusalem, he mobilized the men of Judah and Benjamin—180,000 select troops—to fight against Israel and to restore the kingdom to himself.1When Rehoboam returned to Jerusalem, he gathered together 180,000 specially chosen soldiers from the households of Judah and Benjamin to fight against Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam.
But the LORD said to Shemaiah, the man of God,2But a message from the LORD came to Shemaiah, a man of God:
“Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin:3"Tell Solomon's son Rehoboam, king of Judah and all of Israel in Judah and Benjamin:
‘This is what the LORD says: Do not fight against your relatives. Go back home, for what has happened is my doing!’” So they obeyed the message of the LORD and did not fight against Jeroboam. Rehoboam Fortifies Judah4This is what the LORD says: "You are not to fight or even to approach your relatives in battle. Every soldier is to return to his own home, for this development comes from me."'" So they listened to what the LORD had to say and called off their attack on Jeroboam.
Rehoboam remained in Jerusalem and fortified various towns for the defense of Judah.5Rehoboam continued to live in Jerusalem and built defensive fortification cities throughout Judah,
He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,6including Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,7Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,
Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,8Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. These became the fortified towns of Judah and Benjamin.10Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. These were all fortified cities throughout Judah and Benjamin.
Rehoboam strengthened their defenses and stationed commanders in them, and he stored supplies of food, olive oil, and wine.11He also strengthened the fortified cities, assigned officers to them, and stockpiled food, oil, and wine.
He also put shields and spears in these towns as a further safety measure. So only Judah and Benjamin remained under his control.12He also stockpiled shields and spears in every city and fortified them greatly to secure his rule over Judah and Benjamin.
But all the priests and Levites living among the northern tribes of Israel sided with Rehoboam.13The priests and descendants of Levi throughout Israel also supported him in their districts,
The Levites even abandoned their pasturelands and property and moved to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons would not allow them to serve the LORD as priests.14because the descendants of Levi left their pasture lands and their property to live in Judah and Jerusalem, since Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from participating in priestly services to the LORD.
Jeroboam appointed his own priests to serve at the pagan shrines, where they worshiped the goat and calf idols he had made.15Jeroboam had appointed his own priests to serve at the high places and to serve the satyrs and calves that he had made.
From all the tribes of Israel, those who sincerely wanted to worship the LORD, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem, where they could offer sacrifices to the LORD, the God of their ancestors.16As a result, anyone from all of the tribes of Israel who was determined to seek the LORD God of Israel followed the descendants of Levi to Jerusalem so they could sacrifice to the LORD God of their ancestors,
This strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and for three years they supported Rehoboam son of Solomon, for during those years they faithfully followed in the footsteps of David and Solomon. Rehoboam’s Family17and they continued to strengthen the kingdom of Judah, supporting Solomon's son Rehoboam for three years, by living the way David and Solomon did for three years.
Rehoboam married his cousin Mahalath, the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.18Rehoboam married Mahalath, the daughter of David's son Jerimoth, along with Abihail, the daughter of Jesse's son Eliab,
Mahalath had three sons—Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.19who bore him these sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.
Later Rehoboam married another cousin, Maacah, the granddaughter of Absalom. Maacah gave birth to Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.20After this he married Absalom's daughter Maacah, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.
Rehoboam loved Maacah more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and they gave birth to twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.21Rehoboam loved Absalom's daughter Maacah more than he did all of his wives and mistresses. (He married eighteen wives and 60 concubines, fathering 28 sons and 60 daughters.)
Rehoboam appointed Maacah’s son Abijah as leader among the princes, making it clear that he would be the next king.22Later, Rehoboam appointed Abijah, his son from Maacah, as senior family leader among his brothers, since he intended to establish Abijah as king.
Rehoboam also wisely gave responsibilities to his other sons and stationed some of them in the fortified towns throughout the land of Judah and Benjamin. He provided them with generous provisions, and he found many wives for them.23Rehoboam was wise to distribute some his children throughout all of the territories of Judah and Benjamin, placing them in all of the fortified cities. He allotted them abundant supplies of food and sought many wives for them.
