Matthew 12
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them.1At that time, Jesus walked through the grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples became hungry and began picking heads of grain to eat.
But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, “Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”2When the Pharisees saw this, they told him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!"
Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?3But he told them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat.4How is it that he went into the house of God and ate the Bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him and his companions to eat but was reserved for the priests?
And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath?5Or haven't you read in the Law that on every Sabbath the priests in the Temple violate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?
I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple!6But I tell you, something greater than the Temple is here!
But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’7If you had known what 'I want mercy and not sacrifice' means, you would not have condemned the innocent,
For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath8for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
Then Jesus went over to their synagogue,9Moving on from there, Jesus went into their synagogue.
where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?” (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)10Suddenly, a man with a paralyzed hand appeared. The people asked Jesus if it was lawful to heal on Sabbath days, intending to accuse him of doing something wrong.
And he answered, “If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would.11But he asked them, "Is there a man among you who, if he had one sheep and it fell into a ditch on the Sabbath, wouldn't take hold of it and pull it out?
And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.”12How much more is a human being worth than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on Sabbath days."
Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one!13Then he told the man, "Hold out your hand." He held it out and it became normal, as healthy as his other hand.
Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus. Jesus, God’s Chosen Servant14The Pharisees, however, went out and plotted against Jesus to kill him.
But Jesus knew what they were planning. So he left that area, and many people followed him. He healed all the sick among them,15When Jesus became aware of this, he left that place. Many crowds followed him, and he healed all of them,
but he warned them not to reveal who he was.16ordering them not to make him known.
This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah concerning him:17This was to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
“Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.18"Here is my Servant whom I have chosen, whom I love, and with whom I am pleased! I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to unbelievers.
He will not fight or shout or raise his voice in public.19He will not quarrel or shout, and no one will hear him shouting in the streets.
He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. Finally he will cause justice to be victorious.20He will not snap off a broken reed or snuff out a smoldering wick until he has brought justice through to victory.
And his name will be the hope of all the world.” Jesus and the Prince of Demons21And in his name unbelievers will hope."
Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see.22Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to talk was brought to him. Jesus healed him so that the man could speak and see.
The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”23All the crowds were amazed and kept saying, "This man isn't the Son of David, is he?"
But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons."
Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.25He knew what they were thinking and told them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.
And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive.26So if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How, then, can his kingdom stand?
And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said.27If I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own followers drive them out? That is why they will be your judges!
But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.28But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.29How can someone go into a strong man's house and carry off his possessions without first tying up the strong man? Then he can ransack his house.
“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.30The person who isn't with me is against me, and the person who isn't gathering with me is scattering.
“So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven.31So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.32Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come."
“A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad.33"Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten, because a tree is known by its fruit.
You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.34You children of serpents! How can you say anything good when you are evil? The mouth speaks about what overflows from the heart.
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.35A good person brings good things out of a good treasure house, and an evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure house.
And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.36I tell you, on Judgment Day people will give an account for every thoughtless word they have uttered,
The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” The Sign of Jonah37because by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees told Jesus, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you."
But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.39But he replied to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign. Yet no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah,
For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.40because just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea creature for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
“The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment and condemn the people living today, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. But look—something greater than Jonah is here!
The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.42The queen of the south will stand up and condemn the people living today, because she came from so far away to hear the wisdom of Solomon. But look! Something greater than Solomon is here!"
“When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.43"Whenever an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it wanders through waterless places looking for a place to rest, but finds none.
Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order.44Then it says, 'I will go back to my home that I left.' When it arrives, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order.
Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.” The True Family of Jesus45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and settle there. And so the final condition of that person becomes worse than the first. That's just what will happen to this evil generation!"
As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.46While Jesus was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.
Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.”47Someone told him, "Look! Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak to you."
Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”48He asked the man who told him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers.49Then pointing with his hand at his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers,
Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”50because whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
