So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.12Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.13For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”15For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.16The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. The Future Glory17And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are.19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope,20For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.21Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.22For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.23And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it.24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love30Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?31What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
(As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” )36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
