I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.1It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, the kind of immorality that is not permitted even among the Gentiles, so that someone is cohabiting with his father's wife.
You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.2And you are proud! Shouldn't you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed the one who did this from among you?
Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man3For even though I am absent physically, I am present in spirit. And I have already judged the one who did this, just as though I were present.
in the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church. I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus.4When you gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus,
Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.5turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?6Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast affects the whole batch of dough?
Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.7Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough--you are, in fact, without yeast. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.8So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.
When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.9I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.
But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.10In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world.
I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.11But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.12For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Are you not to judge those inside?
God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.”13But God will judge those outside. Remove the evil person from among you.
