After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said,1After Moses the LORD's servant died, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' assistant:
“Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.2"Moses my servant is dead. Get ready! Cross the Jordan River! Lead these people into the land which I am ready to hand over to them.
I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you—3I am handing over to you every place you set foot, as I promised Moses.
from the Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the land of the Hittites.’4Your territory will extend from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north. It will extend all the way to the great River Euphrates in the east (including all of Syria) and all the way to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.5No one will be able to resist you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not abandon you or leave you alone.
“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.6Be strong and brave! You must lead these people in the conquest of this land that I solemnly promised their ancestors I would hand over to them.
Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.7Make sure you are very strong and brave! Carefully obey all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep! Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in all you do.
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.8This law scroll must not leave your lips! You must memorize it day and night so you can carefully obey all that is written in it. Then you will prosper and be successful.
This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua’s Charge to the Israelites9I repeat, be strong and brave! Don't be afraid and don't panic, for I, the LORD your God, am with you in all you do."
Joshua then commanded the officers of Israel,10Joshua instructed the leaders of the people:
“Go through the camp and tell the people to get their provisions ready. In three days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you.”11"Go through the camp and command the people, 'Prepare your supplies, for within three days you will cross the Jordan River and begin the conquest of the land the LORD your God is ready to hand over to you.'"
Then Joshua called together the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He told them,12Joshua told the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh:
“Remember what Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you: ‘The LORD your God is giving you a place of rest. He has given you this land.’13"Remember what Moses the LORD's servant commanded you. The LORD your God is giving you a place to settle and is handing this land over to you.
Your wives, children, and livestock may remain here in the land Moses assigned to you on the east side of the Jordan River. But your strong warriors, fully armed, must lead the other tribes across the Jordan to help them conquer their territory. Stay with them14Your wives, children and cattle may stay in the land that Moses assigned to you east of the Jordan River. But all you warriors must cross over armed for battle ahead of your brothers. You must help them
until the LORD gives them rest, as he has given you rest, and until they, too, possess the land the LORD your God is giving them. Only then may you return and settle here on the east side of the Jordan River in the land that Moses, the servant of the LORD, assigned to you.”15until the LORD gives your brothers a place like yours to settle and they conquer the land the LORD your God is ready to hand over to them. Then you may go back to your allotted land and occupy the land Moses the LORD's servant assigned you east of the Jordan."
They answered Joshua, “We will do whatever you command us, and we will go wherever you send us.16They told Joshua, "We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.
We will obey you just as we obeyed Moses. And may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses.17Just as we obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. But may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses!
Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey your words and everything you command will be put to death. So be strong and courageous!”18Any man who rebels against what you say and does not obey all your commands will be executed. But be strong and brave!"
