New Living TranslationNew International Version
This is another message that came to me from the LORD:1The word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, turn and face Gog of the land of Magog, the prince who rules over the nations of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him.2"Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him
Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: Gog, I am your enemy!3and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal.
I will turn you around and put hooks in your jaws to lead you out with your whole army—your horses and charioteers in full armor and a great horde armed with shields and swords.4I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army--your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.
Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya will join you, too, with all their weapons.5Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets,
Gomer and all its armies will also join you, along with the armies of Beth-togarmah from the distant north, and many others.6also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops--the many nations with you.
“Get ready; be prepared! Keep all the armies around you mobilized, and take command of them.7"'Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them.
A long time from now you will be called into action. In the distant future you will swoop down on the land of Israel, which will be enjoying peace after recovering from war and after its people have returned from many lands to the mountains of Israel.8After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.
You and all your allies—a vast and awesome army—will roll down on them like a storm and cover the land like a cloud.9You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: At that time evil thoughts will come to your mind, and you will devise a wicked scheme.10"'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme.
You will say, ‘Israel is an unprotected land filled with unwalled villages! I will march against her and destroy these people who live in such confidence!11You will say, "I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people--all of them living without walls and without gates and bars.
I will go to those formerly desolate cities that are now filled with people who have returned from exile in many nations. I will capture vast amounts of plunder, for the people are rich with livestock and other possessions now. They think the whole world revolves around them!’12I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land."
But Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish will ask, ‘Do you really think the armies you have gathered can rob them of silver and gold? Do you think you can drive away their livestock and seize their goods and carry off plunder?’13Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all her villages will say to you, "Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?"'
“Therefore, son of man, prophesy against Gog. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: When my people are living in peace in their land, then you will rouse yourself.14"Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety, will you not take notice of it?
You will come from your homeland in the distant north with your vast cavalry and your mighty army,15You will come from your place in the far north, you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army.
and you will attack my people Israel, covering their land like a cloud. At that time in the distant future, I will bring you against my land as everyone watches, and my holiness will be displayed by what happens to you, Gog. Then all the nations will know that I am the LORD.16You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.
“This is what the Sovereign LORD asks: Are you the one I was talking about long ago, when I announced through Israel’s prophets that in the future I would bring you against my people?17"'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them.
But this is what the Sovereign LORD says: When Gog invades the land of Israel, my fury will boil over!18This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD.
In my jealousy and blazing anger, I promise a mighty shaking in the land of Israel on that day.19In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.
All living things—the fish in the sea, the birds of the sky, the animals of the field, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people on earth—will quake in terror at my presence. Mountains will be thrown down; cliffs will crumble; walls will fall to the earth.20The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground.
I will summon the sword against you on all the hills of Israel, says the Sovereign LORD. Your men will turn their swords against each other.21I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother.
I will punish you and your armies with disease and bloodshed; I will send torrential rain, hailstones, fire, and burning sulfur!22I will execute judgment on him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him.
In this way, I will show my greatness and holiness, and I will make myself known to all the nations of the world. Then they will know that I am the LORD.23And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.'
