Proverbs 16
NLT Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew International Version
We can make our own plans, but the LORD gives the right answer.1To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the LORD comes the proper answer of the tongue.
People may be pure in their own eyes, but the LORD examines their motives.2All a person's ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.
Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.3Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
The LORD has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster.4The LORD works out everything to its proper end-- even the wicked for a day of disaster.
The LORD detests the proud; they will surely be punished.5The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.
Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the LORD, people avoid evil.6Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided.
When people’s lives please the LORD, even their enemies are at peace with them.7When the LORD takes pleasure in anyone's way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.
Better to have little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest.8Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.9In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
The king speaks with divine wisdom; he must never judge unfairly.10The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth does not betray justice.
The LORD demands accurate scales and balances; he sets the standards for fairness.11Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making.
A king detests wrongdoing, for his rule is built on justice.12Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness.
The king is pleased with words from righteous lips; he loves those who speak honestly.13Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right.
The anger of the king is a deadly threat; the wise will try to appease it.14A king's wrath is a messenger of death, but the wise will appease it.
When the king smiles, there is life; his favor refreshes like a spring rain.15When a king's face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.
How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!16How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!
The path of the virtuous leads away from evil; whoever follows that path is safe.17The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives.
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with the proud.19Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.
Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the LORD will be joyful.20Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.
The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.21The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.
Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it, but discipline is wasted on fools.22Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent, but folly brings punishment to fools.
From a wise mind comes wise speech; the words of the wise are persuasive.23The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.
Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.24Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.25There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
It is good for workers to have an appetite; an empty stomach drives them on.26The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on.
Scoundrels create trouble; their words are a destructive blaze.27A scoundrel plots evil, and on their lips it is like a scorching fire.
A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.28A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.
Violent people mislead their companions, leading them down a harmful path.29A violent person entices their neighbor and leads them down a path that is not good.
With narrowed eyes, people plot evil; with a smirk, they plan their mischief.30Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity; whoever purses their lips is bent on evil.
Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life.31Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.
Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.32Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.
We may throw the dice, but the LORD determines how they fall.33The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
