1 After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of Jonathan and David were knit together, and Jonathan loved him as himself. As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Now it came about, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that Jonathan committed himself to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.
2 And from that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father’s house. And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt. 5 So David marched out and prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well. And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, <i>and</i> behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants. And David went <i>into battle</i> wherever Saul sent him, <i>and always</i> achieved success; so Saul put him in charge of the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. Whatever mission Saul sent him on, David was so successful that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the troops, and Saul’s officers as well.
6 As the troops were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments. As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. Now it happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with <i>other</i> musical instruments. When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres.
7 And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” And the women answered <i>one another</i> as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. The women sang as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.” As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”
8 And Saul was furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed <i>but</i> thousands: and <i>what</i> can he have more but the kingdom? Then Saul became very angry, for this lyric displeased him; and he said, “They have given David <i>credit for</i> ten thousands, but to me they have given <i>credit for only</i> thousands! Now <i>what</i> more can he have but the kingdom?” Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?”
9 And from that day forward Saul kept a jealous eye on David. And Saul eyed David from that day on. And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. And Saul eyed David with suspicion from that day on. And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.
10 The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house while David played the harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a spear, The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and <i>there was</i> a javelin in Saul's hand. Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house while David was playing <i>the harp</i> with his hand, as usual; and a spear <i>was</i> in Saul’s hand. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand
11 and he hurled it, thinking, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice. And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice. And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall <i>with it</i>. And David avoided out of his presence twice. Then Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David escaped from his presence, twice. and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.
12 So Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul. Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul. And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul. Now Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him but had left Saul. Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.
13 Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back, So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns.
14 and he continued to prosper in all his ways, because the LORD was with him. And David had success in all his undertakings, for the LORD was with him. And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD <i>was</i> with him. David was successful in all his ways, for the LORD <i>was</i> with him. In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him.
15 When Saul saw that David was very successful, he was afraid of him. And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him. When Saul saw that he was very successful, he was afraid of him. When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him.
16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back. But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them. But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he would go out <i>to battle</i> and return before them. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns.
17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “ I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him. Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife, only be a valiant man for me and fight the LORD’S battles.” For Saul thought, “My hand shall not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the LORD.” For Saul said to himself, “I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!”
18 And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel, that I should become the son-in-law of the king?” And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father’s clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” And David said unto Saul, Who <i>am</i> I? and what <i>is</i> my life, <i>or</i> my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king? But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who is my family, <i>or</i> my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?” But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?”
19 So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah. But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife. But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife. So it came about at the time that Merab, Saul’s daughter, was to be given to David, that she was given <i>instead</i> to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife. So when the time came for Merab, Saul’s daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.
20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when this was reported to Saul, it pleased him. Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. When they informed Saul, the thing was pleasing to him. Now Saul’s daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.
21 “I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.” Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.” And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in <i>the one of</i> the twain. For Saul thought, “I will give her to him so that she may become a trap for him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “For a second time you may become my son-in-law, today.” “I will give her to him,” he thought, “so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.”
22 Then Saul ordered his servants, “Speak to David privately and tell him, ‘Behold, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become his son-in-law.’ ” And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king’s son-in-law.’” And Saul commanded his servants, <i>saying</i>, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law. Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in secret, saying, ‘Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now then, become the king’s son-in-law.’” Then Saul ordered his attendants: “Speak to David privately and say, ‘Look, the king likes you, and his attendants all love you; now become his son-in-law.’”
23 But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it seem trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.” And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you <i>a</i> light <i>thing</i> to be a king's son in law, seeing that I <i>am</i> a poor man, and lightly esteemed? So Saul’s servants spoke these words to David. But David said, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am <i>only</i> a poor man and insignificant?” They repeated these words to David. But David said, “Do you think it is a small matter to become the king’s son-in-law? I’m only a poor man and little known.”
24 And the servants told Saul what David had said. And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David. Then Saul’s servants reported to him, saying, “These are the words David spoke.” When Saul’s servants told him what David had said,
25 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires no other dowry but a hundred Philistine foreskins as revenge on his enemies.’ ” But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the Philistines. Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. Saul then said, “This is what you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” But Saul plotted to have David fall by the hand of the Philistines. Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’” Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.
26 When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the wedding day arrived, And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired, And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired. When his servants told David these words, it pleased David to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the time had expired, When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed,
27 David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage. David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. David set out and went, he and his men, and fatally struck two hundred men among the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they presented all <i>two hundred</i> of them to the king, so that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal as a wife. David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, But when Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, And Saul saw and knew that the LORD <i>was</i> with David, and <i>that</i> Michal Saul's daughter loved him. When Saul saw and realized that the LORD was with David, and <i>that</i> Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,
29 he grew even more afraid of David. So from then on Saul was David’s enemy. Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually. And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually. then Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually. Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.
30 Every time the Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed. Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed. Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, <i>that</i> David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by. Then the commanders of the Philistines went <i>to battle,</i> and it happened as often as they went out, that David was more successful than all the servants of Saul. So his name was held in high esteem. The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul’s officers, and his name became well known.
