2 “Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge? “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Who <i>is</i> this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? “Who is this who darkens <i>the divine</i> plan By words without knowledge? “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?
3 Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. “Now tighten the belt on your waist like a man, And I shall ask you, and you inform Me! Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? 5 Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it? Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the measuring line over it? Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone, On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; “On what were its bases sunk? 10 when I fixed its boundaries and set in place its bars and doors, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, And brake up for it my decreed <i>place</i>, and set bars and doors, And I placed boundaries on it And set a bolt and doors, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,
11 and I declared: ‘You may come this far, but no farther; here your proud waves must stop’? and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’? And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? And I said, ‘As far as this point you shall come, but no farther; And here your proud waves shall stop’? when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?
12 In your days, have you commanded the morning or assigned the dawn its place, “Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; <i>and</i> caused the dayspring to know his place; “Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, <i>And</i> made the dawn know its place, “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,
13 that it might spread to the ends of the earth and shake the wicked out of it? that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? So that it would take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked would be shaken off from it? that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its hills stand out like the folds of a garment. It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment. 16 Have you journeyed to the vents of the sea or walked in the trenches of the deep? “Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? “Have you entered the springs of the sea, And walked in the depth of the ocean? “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? 18 Have you surveyed the extent of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this. Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this. 19 Where is the way to the home of light? Do you know where darkness resides, “Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness, Where <i>is</i> the way <i>where</i> light dwelleth? and <i>as for</i> darkness, where <i>is</i> the place thereof, “Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place, “What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside?
20 so you can lead it back to its border? Do you know the paths to its home? that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home? That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths <i>to</i> the house thereof? That you would take it to its territory, And discern the paths to its home? Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings?
21 Surely you know, for you were already born! And the number of your days is great! You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! 25 Who cuts a channel for the flood or clears a path for the thunderbolt, “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain and a way for the thunderbolt, Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; “Who has split <i>open</i> a channel for the flood, And a way for the thunderbolt, Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm,
26 to bring rain on a barren land, on a desert where no man lives, to bring rain on a land where no man is, on the desert in which there is no man, To cause it to rain on the earth, <i>where</i> no man <i>is; on</i> the wilderness, wherein <i>there is</i> no man; To bring rain on a land without people, <i>On</i> a desert without a person in it, to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert,
27 to satisfy the parched wasteland and make it sprout with tender grass? to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground sprout with grass? To satisfy the desolate and waste <i>ground</i>; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? To satisfy the waste and desolate land, And to make the seeds of grass to sprout? to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass?

33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth? 34 Can you command the clouds so that a flood of water covers you? “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of waters may cover you? 35 Can you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’? Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’? Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we <i>are</i>? “Can you send flashes of lightning, so that they may go And say to you, ‘Here we are’? Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has put wisdom in the heart or given understanding to the mind? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind? Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart? “Who has put wisdom in the innermost being, Or given understanding to the mind? Who gives the ibis wisdom or gives the rooster understanding?
37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Or who can tilt the water jars of the heavens Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
