5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you would set in order what was unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, having children who are believers and who are not open to accusation of indiscretion or insubordination. if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. <i>namely,</i> if any man is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of indecent behavior or rebellion. An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.
7 As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach— not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.
8 Instead, he must be hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
